Dardis is by far the best out of these , but for some reason mcentee doesnt fancy him I think If you gave him,Nippy and Conlon a run in the OBC we would see some action summerhillof69 (Meath) - Posts: 228 - 07/11/2019 13:29:21 2248292 Link 0 |

Hes no Robert Ruddy , Or Pa O Rourke but did did more than alright . . Were you at the game?? TBH Barry shouldnt even play in the OBC as we all knwo what hes capable of when given a fair shot Its lads like Nippy, Aaron Lynch and other lads that need to be given a shot not men like Dardis who have nothing to prove summerhillof69 (Meath) - Posts: 228 - 07/11/2019 15:40:00 2248340 Link 0 |
What new additions are there to the Meath extended panel for 2020 O Byrne Cup ? Bear10 (Meath) - Posts: 463 - 07/11/2019 17:11:41 2248369 Link 1 |
I'm a big fan of Dardis and would have him on the team for his free taking (and potential freetaking ability given the right coaching) alone and I've always had a soft spot for Summerhill...but there is no way he is better than Shane Walsh!

If we see Donal Lenihan, Eamonn and Joey (especially) and possibly someone like Jordan Morris come in then we have a good forward unit. Thejoeshow (Meath) - Posts: 687 - 08/11/2019 08:47:24 2248488 Link 0 |
Has to be Menton & B Conlon for me at the moment although Cian O Brien worth a shout

In all seriousness though, The starting 15 is decent at the minute but i definitely think we need a few additions this year to bulk up the squad for Div 1. GK - The most important addition we need is a gk if there were a transfer market we would break the bank for Patton,Brody or Beggan seeing as Cluxton would be unatainable. Unfortunately i honestly dont know of a keeper in the county who could come in and make a massive difference (I'm sure there are quality keepers in Meath but i havent seen every team play junior-senior). Plenty of great shot-stoppers but i honestly feel kickouts are the most important part of goalkeeping in modern football. Of the keepers ive seen Marcus Brennan who is already on the panel is the best in the county. Additions - Maybe Liam Hogan from Curraha and York- Meath hill worth a look. Defenders - The back 6 is are strongest area. Lavin, McGill, Gallagher, Keoghan, Harnan and J.McEntee is a Div 1 back 6. Kane and Ronan Ryan are very capable subs to bring in too then you've Curran and the McGoverns who can slot into a few positions too. Additions - James Reilly-Kells. Brian McGrath and Breen Conlon-Simonstown Midfield - After Gk this is another area that needs urgent improvement. Menton had a great year but desperately needs a partner. S.McEntee tries his best but i dont think midfield is his position. How we could do with Nash or Ronan Jones now. Most of the best midfielders on the club scene the last few years are too old for county football unfortunately and i dont think there are too many other standouts on the club scene. We may have to try and re-invent someone as a midfielder perhaps O'Coilleann from NOM or Devine from Na Fianna two athletic lads who can run. Additions - Swaine-Athboy. McGowan-Ratoath Forwards - I think in meath at the minute our best forwards seem to be similar style of players ie Conlon,Joey Wallace,Lenihan and Brian McMahon. All very fast nippy forwards who thrive on quick ball out in front or down the sides. Even Newman who was our best forward last year isnt a target man (He is tall but doesnt relish high ball in and is always looking for the pop pass in front) . Now theres nothing wrong with these sort of players and i do think each of the players listed are class players but unfortunately in the modern game you need a couple of different options. Tyrone have McShane as a target man, Dublin had O'Gara and even Con O'callaghan can win any sort of ball put in. In Kerry Clifford can contest the high ball and T Walsh come son to do the same. Donegal have McBrearty and Murphy can go inside too. In meath thankfully Shane Walsh looks like he can play target man but he is still very young and we cant expect too much. T.O'Reilly is talented but hasnt done it near enough for me but is still young. Dardis is very good player and 6 foot but anyone who watches him can see again hes not a high ball merchant. Now im not saying we need a fridge inside who you just rain high ball in on top of but all the top teams have an inside forward who can win any kind of ball and gives them a different style of attack. As i said i think Walsh will progress to be that player. I'm not on the wind-up but i honestly think Paddy O'rourke is that kind of player, he can win ball out in front or high ball but obviously he wont be considered for the panel. Aside from that Saran Finnegan for the tones is promising but still a tad green. other than that i cant think of any Full forward type players who can come in. In general forwards who id like to see brought in would be Reilly who plays inside for Kells and Mattimoe. Kevin Ryan-Summerhill. Joey and Eamonn Wallace- Ratoath. Shane Gillespie-NavanO'Mahonys(think he could be away). I'd leave off Morris, Costello, Mitchell and Lynch for a year or two yet. could Cillian o sullivan do a job in midfield, pace, power and decent footballer, can cover the ground moving back and forward, not the tallest i know but maybe an option. StickFan (Meath) - Posts: 217 - 08/11/2019 14:06:44 2248574 Link 0 |

I think when you look at the players above, I would say Ben will get another crack but, even as a huge biggy fan, I'm not sure his current level of play would warrant him being included in match day squads apart from experience. I think meath need to push on and neither of them, in my view, have the dynamism to offer that. I'd fully expect Sean tobin to be in same boat too. Ben had one mare of a game. Where let's be honest so did about 9/10 others. Graham's experiences I think are vital in tight games. The games against Kildare and Clare last year I don't think we would have won only for his influence. Still think both have something to offer this year.

Graham not remotely up to it for the last few years ,and showed little appetite for the fray ...Ben might be a help from time to time ...

Interesting to see him referencing the "floppy foot". It's something that has definitely cost us a few scores in every game. It must be a confidence thing. Also interesting to see him mention the recent player feedback sessions and the point about not knowing how to address some of the players requests. We're lucky to have Nally in fairness and sounds like he works well with McEntee.
