Cavan V Donegal - USFC Final 2019

Looking the the game i was disappointed with how cavan lined out , we need a big improvement moving forward , i thought we were very negative and didnt go at them at all , brady should of passed for a goal but didnt that would of got use right back in the game , our kickouts were terrible. On a positive , o reilly was very impressive when he came on , won most ball that came to him .

Has to be a change at goalkeeper lads! Primary possession is so important now, we just can't get away with a goalkeeper who is so inconsistent. 4 or 5 bad kickouts in the first half directly let to Donegal scores, and for the love of god take him off the frees!!

There is no doubting that we were a well beaten team by 3.40 on Sunday. The 5 point gap was not a true reflection of the gap between the teams. What struck me most from an early stage was the difference in conditioning between the teams, at stages Donegal players just powered by the Cavan players. The other thing that struck me was the lack of a high fielding mid fielder on our team. Apart from the Tyrone game last summer when Gearoid lorded things in the middle sector we have been well beaten in that sector of the past number of years.

Hopefully we get Mayo or Tyrone in the qualifiers next Monday and get a shot of righting some of the wrongs of Sunday.

At half time, Donegal had scored 1pt from winning their own kick out, they scored 4 pts from winning the Cavan kickout and 8 pts from turning Cavan over. At 60 mins, the score was 1-18 to 0-12, only 7 pts of Donegal's scoring came from winning a kick out, (2pts from their own, 5pts from Cavan's), but staggeringly, 1-11 off that score came from turnovers.

For a Senior County Team, to give away 1:11 from turnovers is very poor, and whilst he has been one of our better footballers, Mr McVeety himself was Cavan's main culprit. People mainly see all the good things he does, but for a Senior Footballer, at times, he runs into far too many tackles and gets turned over far too many times.

first ulster final in 18 years against what everyone knew was a genuine all ireland contender and we just simply weren't good enough. they're on a different level. you don't have that split second to make decisions on the ball that lets say armagh gave us...... it was so obvious how their minds were working when cavan scored, while our lads were switched off for a split second Donegal took advantage!!! But that comes from playing at that level, it's like putting a junior footballer into a senior team. the level of negativity here from some poster (not all) is frustrating to read. anything from picking faults to blaming micky to looking for a revamp!!!!!!! even looking at unearthing new player, like we can just go and dig one up around Crosskeys and throw him in full forward. what's there is there, they just need exposure to the highest level!!! that's why the super 8's would be massive for us. its all about exposure and what lessons the lads take from that. you heard one or two of the roscommon lads mention last week at the importance of the super 8's to their development.
Lastly all i'll say is i'm proud of the lads and thankful to them. it wasn't to be and there's no shame in losing to a team like donegal. the graph is still on an upward trajectory.

Bit of perspective needed. We played in our first Ulster Final since 2001, we have a chance of getting into the Super 8s if things go our way. There was a great buzz leading up to the final and hopefully a great buzz leading up to the qualifier too. But the problem is that people start hyping up the team, talking about All Ireland semi-finals etc, they then start blaming the manager for the wrong selections when things go wrong.

But being realistic, in my opinion, there's 3 levels at the moment, Dublin are on the top level, Its hard to see who's going to compete with them, on the 2nd level, there's arguably Kerry, Donegal, Mayo & Tyrone, and on the third level, Galway, Cavan, Roscommon, Armagh, Cork and maybe one or two others.

We saw the difference between Cavan and Donegal on Sunday, the 5pt margin was not a reflection of the match because there was a massive gulf in class and Its difficult to how Cavan can get up there. We conceded 1-11 from turnovers which is criminal for a senior Inter county team and whilst people might cite inexperience for this, most of these turnovers came from our most experienced players, the main culprit being McVeety, so if your experienced players are doing this at this stage of their careers, how can the team improve in the future.

I think people need to lower their expectations and enjoy the next few weeks, hopefully, we'll get a kind draw and push on to the Super 8s and hopefully compete well. Roscommon are Connaught Champions and will be a different animal in the Championship but hopefully the win against them in the league might spur us on should we get to meet them.

Get behind the manager, its his first year, get behind the team, but lower your expectations and enjoy the summer.

Good post. Breaking the mentality of the last few years is Micky biggest challenge and he ain't going to do it in 1 year. He has definitely improved things but as a previous poster said we need to lower our expectations. We are in bonus territory now.
It would be nice to compete in the super 8s but even nicer to beat Tyrone on the way to them. That would show real improvement

A lot of negativity since Sunday on here.

Firstly I think it is important to realise just how far the team has come. Really, did anything ever think this day last year we would be giving 15-20,000 Cavan supporters a day out in Clones in an Ulster Final?
Cavan have shown huge promise in one year under Mickey Graham.

Truth be told it was disappointing tactics and fair to say it was the wrong set up in the first half. Simply we had no forwards in the first half. The game was slightly more enjoyable (emphasis on slightly) to watch thanks to the two goals. Was delighted for Stephen Murray and Conor Madden to grab the goals (kudos to Cian Mackey for superb pass in). Must be noted- three impact subs who looked sharp and hungry- but too late introducing them.

Niall Murray & Gerry Smith both carrying injuries and knocks and unfortunately showed on the day.
Kickout's just not good enough.
McVitty tied up by good homework done by Donegal.
Full forward selection line was wrong by management.

It wasn't our day, but Donegal are a brilliant team who are just better than Cavan. However, I find it hard to understand how a poster on here said the lads had a mentality before the game that they were not going to win.
Do you realise how much time and sacrifice these guys make to wear the Cavan jersey? How much they miss out on in their personal lives? They train 4 times a week. They put everything they have into the game.
I think they deserve more respect. Nobody puts this much effort in to think they arent good enough.

Did you see Gearoid McKiernan in floods of tears after the full time whistle.

We need to be proud of our men and give them the support they deserve.
Hopefully we dont get an Ulster Team in the qualifiers where we can play good direct football which i know we have in us, so we dont have to start our backs as forwards.

I would fancy a nice fast pace game against Mayo. We had one bad day. Let's not be sunshine supporters.

The only difference between this year and others is that we met the eventual Ulster champions on Ulster Final day as opposed to an earlier round. Your expectations have certainly being lowered compared to other years, like last year you reckoned both Donegal & Tyrone were past their best and it was only a matter of Cavan turning up to win. Just to remind you Donegal won Ulster and Tyrone contested the All Ireland Final. In each of the years 2012/13/15/16 & 2018 we were beaten by the eventual Ulster Champions and the teams that beat us in 2014 & 2017 reached the All Ireland Quarter Finals. This year we beat a declining Monaghan team who failed to get by the 2nd round of the qualifiers and an Armagh team who I'd put on a par with ourselves. Once again when it came to the top teams in the province we couldn't deliver. Was last years defeat to Donegal any worse than this years? No, we got hammered both years , if we get lucky and draw Laois/Offaly/Westmeath or Clare in the next round and beat them to qualify for the super 8's will this be an improvement on other years or will it just be the luck of the draw? maybe we should lower our expectations, and realise that this year so far has been no better than the last number of years.

Going back to 1888 Cavan never met Donegal in a senior Ulster Final until Sunday last.

A few years ago we had a good Monaghan team on the rack but reverted to defending when we should have pushed on . And we all know what happened then.
At least this year Mickey is trying to play football going forward something we hadn't done very often this past 8 years.
Yes although beaten in an Ulster final the signs are more positive after 1 year of Mickey than they were after 5 years of Hyland.
It's going to take Mickey time to banish the defensive brainwash of the 2 previous managers. But the signs are good.
Even the supporters are back out in force .

No harm to Mickey, I like the man but if he's trying to play football going forward why start 11 defense minded players in the Ulster Final?
The championship attendance for Cavan in Breffni in the last few years is as follows
Preliminary 2012 v Donegal 12,847,
Preliminary 2013 v Armagh 12,000
QF 2015 v Monaghan 18,541
QF 2016 v Armagh 15,236
QF 2017 v Monaghan 12,993
QF 2019 v Monaghan 13,496

Does this not show that crowds were actually increasing during Hylands time not decreasing. The first semi final this year v Armagh had a crowd of around 16,700 only 1,500 up on a first round game in 2016. It's most likely that next year if we have an Ulster Championship game in Breffni the crowds shall surpass the 13,496 from this year as crowds will always follow a team on the up, as can be seen during Hylands reign .

Yeah Hylands record in the Ulster Championship is amazing over a 5 year period. Seems his record in Connacht is heading the same way!

You were quiet after the Monaghan and Armagh games but one loss and you're back to what you do best - negative spiteful sh***!

Tyrone would be my preference in the round 4 qualifiers. Like you say, beating them would show real improvement. Another monkey off the back so to speak. We've already got rid of quite a few under Mickey. Beating Roscommon, Monaghan, appearing in an ulster final etc.... I wouldn't fear any team bar Dublin, Donegal maybe Kerry. The rest are beatable imo. One more win and we are definitely on the up. Failing to make the super eights after what's happened would tarnish the year ever so slightly for me but none the less very happy.

Four ulster championship games for us this summer, its been a while..... Question; of the 24 starting spots for forwards in those four games, how many have been occupied by players actually playing as a forward for their club on a regular basis?

Why do you ask?

McVitty plays midfield for Crosserlough, but is a natural forward. Gerry Smith plays midfield for Lavey but can play wing forward or wing back.

Madden, Martin, Kiernan, Pierson, are all forwards for their clubs. Kiernan has lined out at wing back for Castlerahan too.

T Galligan plays a bit of both, but was used at full forward to allow us go direct.

And then there's Killian Clarke who plays centre forward for Shercock and Ray Galligan who plays centre/full forward for Lacken.
