Cian O’Brien struck for 1-2 early in the second-half as University of Ulster defeated MTU Cork by 1-16 to 1-11 in Round 2B of the Sigerson Cup in Belfield last night (Wednesday).
The Cork students had edged a 0-7 to 0-6 half-time lead and Brian Thompson doubled their advantage ahead of UU storming ahead through Fermanagh’s O’Brien.
From there, would go on to level the contest through a Fintan Fenner goal but UU moved ahead again and the scores of Harry Magill and Jamie Doran saw them claiming the victory.
In Dangan, University Galway recorded a 1-27 to 4-15 win over ATU Sligo, with 1-8 from Eoin Colleran proving decisive for the Galway students as they moved into the next round, while ATU Galway cruised to a 1-20 to 0-12 win against St Mary’s in Blanchardstown.
Paul Kelly struck the game’s only goal in the first-half and his side would go on to register 0-7 without reply in the second-half to get safely over the line.
In Round 2A, UCC were 1-19 to 2-14 winners over Queen’s University, Belfast in Abbottstown.
The Cork students booked their place into the quarter-finals of the competition thanks to a Ruairí Murphy two-pointer being backed up by a late Cormac Dillon free.
Having led by 1-10 to 1-5 at the half, UCC saw their advantage slipping away after Noah Grimes’s goal was backed up by a couple of points ahead of Murphy firing his side back in front from outside the arc and Dillon putting a rubberstamp on the win.
