Portaferry are Down senior hurling champions for the fourth year running after recording a 2-24 to 2-13 win over Ballygalget at Pairc Esler on Sunday.

An Eoin Pucci goal after eight minutes gave Ballygalget a promising start to this decider in Newry, but the defending champions responded to the concession with an unaswered 1-1 which included a penalty from Cathal Coleman (1-8).

Pucci netted a second goal to move Ballygalget towards a 2-6 to 1-7 half-time lead before the second-half saw the St Patrick’s club upping it a gear.

Niall Fitzsimmons and Daithi Sands shot over points that saw them storming in front prior to a 42nd minute goal from Eoghan Sands putting them up by five.

Coleman, Fitzsimmons and Finn Turpin added points in the closing quarter as Portaferry cruised to a 25th county SHC success in the end, setting up a Ulster club semi-final date with Derry kingpins Slaughtneil on the weekend of November 15/16.
