Richie English has confirmed his inter-county retirement after nine years in the green and white of Limerick.

The Doon clubman has taken the decision after accepting the fact he can no longer submit to the physical demands required, with the 30-year-old having suffered two cruciate ligament injuries during his playing career. The second ACL tear occurred just weeks out from Limerick’s 2023 All-Ireland SHC final triumph over Kilkenny.

English won five All-Ireland medals with the Treaty men, starting at left corner-back in the 2018 decider against Galway, which saw the Shannonsiders ending their county’s 45-year wait for the Liam MacCarthy Cup.

He also has as six Munster senior medals and was named an All-Star in 2018 before being nominated again the following year.

In a statement released last night confirming his decision to hang up his boots, English said:

"After nine years the time has come for me to leave the Limerick senior hurling panel.

"It has been an honour to be part of this group and we have made incredible memories. It is not easy to step away from such a wonderful group but unfortunately my body will not let me get to the levels needed for the coming year.

"I have been very fortunate to play with an incredible group of players who I have shared some of the best days of my life with and to them I will be forever grateful."

Limerick chairman Seamus McNamara also paid tribute on behalf of the county board, saying: "Richie has had a number of setbacks over the years but has also shown great resolve in getting back to the field where he has excelled. He has been a fantastic ambassador for the county."
