Ballina Stephenites are Mayo senior football champions for the third year running after completing a remarkable late comeback against Westport to win by 2-13 to 1-15 at Hastings McHale Park this afternoon.

The holders trailed by 10 points with nine minutes remaining in this county final replay before Evan Regan’s goal sparked their revival and the Ballina captain would grab the winning point in the fifth minute of injury-time to break Westport hearts.

It was the 2022 champions that made the perfect start to this decider, netting a goal via Finnbar McLoughlin just 12 seconds in and they’d go on to lead by seven points.

The half-time scoreline in Castlebar read 1-10 to 0-6 and Killian Kilkelly would add more points for his side that helped stretch their advantage to nine by the 40th minute.

The margin between the teams moved into double figures (1-14 to 0-7) eight minutes later and it looked as though Westport would be bringing home the Paddy Moclair Cup.

A Regan goal from a quickly taken free arrived just at the right time for Ballina however, as they’d fightback to get it level with the help of scores from Conor McStay and Regan before the latter sent over the winning point off his left boot deep in injury-time to seal his club’s 39th county SFC success in dramatic fashion.
