Ulster University opened their Sigerson Cup defence with an emphatic 2-18 to 1-7 victory away to ATU Sligo.

In the only one of last night's four scheduled first round games to go ahead - TU Dublin v Galway University, UCC v UCD and TUS Midlands v Maynooth University were all postponed due to the freezing conditions - the holders led from pillar to post with Down's Danny Magill catching the eye.

Early points from Conor Cush and Danny Fullerton helped to settle Paul Rouse's men before an unanswered 1-2 - the goal coming from Senan Carr in the 26th minute - put them in complete control.

James Donlon replied with a free for the hosts before the first of Magill's three points sent UU into the break with a seven-point advantage.

Cush and Donlon traded scores after the restart before a Fullerton penalty put the result beyond doubt. Full back Conor Johnston responded with a smashing goal for ATU Sligo, but the holders cruised home.
