All-Ireland finalists St Brigid's hit by fixture controversy in Roscommon

St Brigid’s have confirmed they will not fulfil their Roscommon junior football championship fixture against St Aidan’s following a dispute over the scheduling of two club games on Sunday afternoon.

St Brigid’s, who were defeated by Dingle in last January's All-Ireland club SFC final after extra time, had requested that the junior fixture be moved to another day to allow players and management from both teams to attend and support their clubmates in the senior championship quarter-final against Roscommon Gaels. The club also wanted its supporters to have the opportunity to attend both games.

However, St Brigid’s say the CCC was unable to accommodate the request, leaving both fixtures scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

Following discussions with their junior players and management, the club decided not to fulfil the junior championship fixture.

In a statement released on Friday, St Brigid’s said: “Please note that our Junior Men's game, scheduled to take place on Sunday between St Brigid's and St Aidan's, has been cancelled.

"St Brigid's had requested that the game be played on a different day from our Senior Men's Championship Quarter-final, so as to allow players from both teams attend and support their clubmates and to enable club members to attend both games.

"Unfortunately, the CCC were unable to accommodate us and both games were fixed for Sunday afternoon. Having discussed the topic with players and management from our Junior team, the decision was reached that we would not fulfil the Junior fixture.

"We would like to acknowledge the contribution of the Junior team and management during the year, and in reaching this difficult decision. Thank you for your understanding."
