Tuam Stadium is expected to be out of action for the next couple of weeks after the pitch was vandalised on Tuesday night.
The vandal / vandals drove the stadium’s lawnmower over the playing surface, rendering it unplayable for an All-Ireland Colleges semi-final tomorrow and also casting doubts of its ability to host upcoming Connacht MFC and U20 games which are fixed for the spiritual home of Galway football.
Sharing photos of the damage on social media, Tuam Stadium secretary Ian Doyle labelled the person or persons responsible as ‘thugs’ who showed ‘no respect whatsoever for all the work that so many local people, including the Tuam Stadium Committee, DAFTS & the CE scheme workers, are doing to help promote Gaelic games in Tuam’.
He wrote: "I'm very saddened to have to report this damage which was done to the pitch in Tuam Stadium yesterday.
"The thugs who broke into the stadium & then into the storeroom which stores our lawn mower (which they drove onto the pitch to cause this damage!) have shown absolutely no respect whatsoever for all the work that so many local people, including the Tuam Stadium Committee, DAFTS & the CE scheme workers, are doing to help promote gaelic games in Tuam.
"Because of this vandalism, we have lost an All-Ireland PPS football semi-final which was due to be played in Tuam Stadium this Friday. We are also in danger of losing Connacht minor & U17 Championship games, which are due to be played here in the coming weeks.
"All we ask of you is this - 1. If you have any information relating to this vandalism, please contact the Tuam Gardai or myself or any of the Tuam Stadium Committee ASAP?
"We need to ensure that these scumbags are dealt with by the proper authorities."
