These two sides met in the opening round of Group A and the Athboy/Rathcairn combination recorded a 3-12 to 1-9 win in Walterstown.

The 'Blacks' got a perfect start with an Eanna Holland goal and by the 10th minute they held a 1-1 to 0-1 lead. Clann na nGael enjoyed a spell of dominance between the 10th and 20th minute. Impressive midfielders Cormac Smith and Eoin Kelleher along with Daragh Wright and Dylan Doherty raised white flags before Smith got their opening goal to open up a 1-5 to 1-2 lead. Walterstown fought back to lead at the break 1-6 to 1-5 with unanswered points from Holland, Robbie Davis, Fionnan O’Connor and half back Cormac Maguire.

Holland and Doherty traded points in the early stages of the second half before Walterstown made a push for home. A brilliant two pointer from O’Connor was followed by an Ollie Maloney goal and when O’Connor landed another two pointer the writing was on the wall for the team in Green and Gold.

County Under 20 star Ben Corkery set up Wright for a well worked goal to give them some hopoe but by then Walterstown were well on the road to victory.

After the game County Board Chairman Jason Plunkett presented the Stiofán O'Mealóid Cup to Walterstown Conor McEntee. Stiofán passed away in tragic circumstances in 2007 and while he played nearly all his football with Clann na nGael he lined out for Dunderry in his early career.

Walterstown scorers: Fionnan O’Connor 0-6, Eanna Holland 1-2, Ollie Maloney 1-0, Sean Colgan, Adam Brady, Robbie Davis and Cormac Maguire 0-1 each

Clann na nGael scorers: Cormac Smith 1-2, Daragh Wright 1-1, Dylan Doherty 0-2, Eoin Kelleher and Ben Corkery 0-1 each
