Navan O’Mahony’s 2-11 Blackhall Gaels 4-07
On a wet evening in Paddy O’Brien Park on Tuesday, O’Mahony’s comeback fell just short as they suffered their first loss of the SBCC campaign to Blackhall Gaels by two points.
The visitors wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, winning the throw-in and firing a ball to the net within seconds. Three minutes later, they followed this up with a goal before Aoibhín Kielty pointed from play. Another goal was avoided when Saoirse O’Regan pulled on a ball to deliver it to safety. Just shy of the six minute mark, Blackhall found the net again to leave six between the sides at this early stage.
Although Isabel O’Connor reduced the gap with a point from play after good passage of play from Tara Fay and Cara Ratty, a third goal in the first twelve minutes left eight between the sides and O’Mahony’s chasing the game. Over the next ten minutes, the sides exchanged points with O’Connor adding two while the visitors raised one white flag.
After a Ratty score reduced the gap to six points once again, Blackhall Gaels enjoyed another purple patch for the final ten minutes of the half. They hit four scores before the half time whistle to leave ten points between the sides at the interval.
Navan O’Mahony’s 0-05 Blackhall Gaels 3-06
O’Mahony’s got the first score of the second half but it was a slower start than the first, with five minutes having elapsed before the flag was raised. Five minutes later, a Blackhall Gaels free dropped high into the square and ended in the net to leave twelve between the sides.
O’Mahony’s, facing a serious uphill battle in tough conditions, never gave 8up and with fifteen minutes remaining, Kielty pointed a free to get her side going again. A good score from Izzy Kinsella was followed by a Jorja Keogh goal and suddenly the sides were close again.
Blackhall Gaels added another score before O’Mahony’s sent home 1-02 in a two-minute period, with O’Connor getting the goal. With five minutes remaining, O’Mahony’s needed more scores and one came courtesy of a Keogh free approaching injury time.
Ultimately, Blackhall Gaels had enough to hold out and emerged as two-point winners in an entertaining game with an exciting finish despite the conditions.
