The 2 pointer has added hugely to the game overall. Kicking skill is rewarded. And the 2 point from a free has to be maintained otherwise you will have lads fouling like hell on the arc to only give up a 1 point chance. Eddie the Exile (Monaghan) - Posts: 1246 - 17/06/2025 10:53:44 2618626 Link 1 |
A free from half way for breaches of 3 up/4back will surely lead to deliberate breaches to break momentum. A free from the 20 without the 2 pt option would suffice IMO. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2446 - 17/06/2025 11:04:15 2618632 Link 0 |
I think it diminishes the goal, and I love the goal. realdub (Dublin) - Posts: 8787 - 17/06/2025 11:10:08 2618633 Link 0 |
Are you still rambling on? The solo and go is a fantastic rule change to speed the game up. Maybe you can't see that but every person that I've spoken to at matches praise the rule.

The point of the punishment being draconian is that the aim is that, over time, the breaches become vanishingly rare. A free on the half way line wouldn't work. A team could be attacking within the 45m line or the arc and their opposition could flood players back in order to get the attacking team moves back to the half way line. You end up punishing the team that hasn't transgressed more. At the moment most games I've watched haven't had a breach, and the amount of breaches should disagree over time. But the punishment must be kept to an almost guaranteed concession of a score. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13825 - 17/06/2025 12:30:48 2618680 Link 1 |
I love goals too, but it looks like the number of them might be on the increase with the new rules. There was an analysis after the provincials that goal chances had increased and goals scored had decreased slightly. But the sample size was very small. I'd like to see an updated version now that groups are finished. Admittedly, I've been more attuned to our own games where we've been scoring a good few goals, but there seems to be a decent number being scored between Sam Maguire and Tailteann Cup. He doesnt attend games, how could he see it. He is in his dark room watching black and white stills from 1947.

Yes, be interesting to find out, I'd imagine there is less incentive, especially if you have a couple of good 2 pointer merchants. It does seem to put a shine on the scoreboard, even for teams that normally get beat out the gate. I'll just have to suck it up and get used to it. I was curious to know if they will have to resort to a VAR for 2 pointers which are taken from the edge of the arc. Hope we don't see a controversial end to a big game. realdub (Dublin) - Posts: 8787 - 17/06/2025 13:49:46 2618714 Link 1 |
Yeah I think the danger is there is something controversial in a massive knockout game and it proves the difference. Maybe it's cos we currently don't seem to create 2pt chances never mind take them! ;)

Colour photography and moving pictures existed then. It's not as long ago as you'd like it to be. Still, nice to have something like that to look back on at all

Smashing weekend of football.Kieran MC geeney is correct, the present system is just starting to work and should be left standing with even Armagh top of the group giving everything and Donegal refusing to settle for a draw. isfeidirrlinn (Armagh) - Posts: 13 - 17/06/2025 16:01:25 2618767 Link 1 |
The double eliminator will just require one round to setup 2A for direct access to the quarter finals and 2B for elimination danger. You'll have to win Round 1 to at least guarantee home advantage in Round 3.

It is a terrible system for so many reasons. Really needs to be looked at again.

Yes of course. People in their mid eighties remember it well.

Can you not read…. I never mentioned the "solo and go" which is a great idea but sometimes can be taken advantage of by players soloing into their nearest opponent but that can be tided up….

Teams that lose twice in a championship should be sent packing!
