How Do We Improve Meath Inter County Hurling?

That's a fairly shocking state. Is there any Meath hurler going to Maynooth that would be good enough to make their panel?
Perhaps Ryan Cup panels will show up better, with DIT and TCD involved there."
Unfortunately it shows the sad state of Meath Hurling atm. We have always had representation at Fitz level. Over the past few years Trinity have had a few Meath lads, Maynooth always had one or two. Ryan cup which is still a good level should have a few more Meath men involved, the likes of Athlone, Marino, DCU (St Pats) and even Carlow have dropped back down top the level so god knows who will be playing for them.

Lads ths standard of hurling in Meath is pathetic. Bar the very top few clubs any game is practically unwatchable, the skills are just not there. Considering hurling gets 50% of the fixtures times and weekends the improvements are not coming.

Agree that the standard is woeful. Meath always had hurlers who would have been considered good enough to make any intercounty team. Granted our best hurler at the moment is playing with Waterford, the same cannot be said for anyone else.

On the college front, Kilmessan are U21 champs, and nobody deemed good enough to play Fitz with their repscective colleges. Will any of them even play freshers if eligible? There seems to be a reluctance to play at that level by many players - the fear that their actual level would be exposed? I've often seen very average club hurlers be transformed by playing college hurling.
Ryan Cup is very competitve this year with Carlow, DIT, Pats Thurles and Trinity involved. With the exception of Pats, all have been Fitzgibbon until recently.

Have you seen the standard of football.

Does it get 50% of the underage resources from GPA, School, Coaching, promotion etc . . .I highly doubt it.
Hurling people in Meath work their arses off trying to promote the game, have a look at some of the football clubs who seem to tolerate hurling and no more and ask why hurling is so bad, because it is not let flourish for fear of it taking something away from Meath football.

Maybe you should get involved if you aren't already and try turn around the "pathetic" hurling skills at your own club.

Any word on the county panel? How is the new management bedding in? I heard that a lot of lads were involved before Christmas but not sure where the panel is at at this stage

I believe there's a main panel and a development panel. As for who's on them, I'm not sure

Great to see the minor hurling squad announced Seems to be a good spread of clubs involved and looks a really professional set up. I think this team did well in Celtic Challenge last year. best wishes to all involved

Jack Meager started wing forward for Na Fianna (Dublin) in the All Ireland club final at the weekend. Played underage with Don/Ash and the Meath minor hurlers in the past. Played really well, just wondering if he is in and around any of the county setups.

He moved to Na Fianna in his mid teens (u15ish I think). Still played Meath minor. Do not think he made any county u20s, but injury and illness may have played a role in that. He is a very good hurler. It takes an exceptional hurler to make that Na Fianna team.

Off topic but is there other examples of Meath losing talented hurlers to other counties?

Obviously Fagan being the high profile example.

Id be more concerned with the issue of just getting the best players to tog out as it seems a few a missing again this year.

Fagan is an example of a good Meath underage hurler who through 3rd level education found himself in a high performance environment and thrived.
Fagan and Meager are products of their environment, by no means exceptional players when they were in Meath.

My point relates to the title of this thread, and that we don't have the structures/setups in place to maximize the potential in our young players.

Definitely some lads not getting enough game time with Westmeath that would be eligible for Meath, a lot of strong boarder clubs, Raharney, Castlepollard, Lough lene gaels

A lot of nonsense here re Westmeath etc. We should be encouraging our Senior squad plus the 20s and minors to see how we can mould these 50/60 players into a decent competitive squad over the next 5/10 years

Great result for Boyne Community School this afternoon in the All Ireland college's hurling semifinal. Finished level after normal time with a very dodgey point being awarded against them but thankfully won in extra time. Well done all.

We should have a regional championship for hurling. Look at the excitement and success the regional football championship has brought to the county. There is no reason why this shouldn't be replicated for the small ball. A bit of winter hurling to harden the lads up. Happy to hear everyones thoughts
