You dont get broadcasting rights. Rte dotn have rights in Northern Ireland. BBC do.
It's not ridiculous

+1 to everything others have said ahead of me.

RTE don't have the rights to broadcast the Olympics to anywhere within the UK. And whether you like it or not, that includes you.

Replying To GreenandRed:  "RTE don't have the rights to broadcast the Olympics in the North. BBC hold those rights."
Unfortunately GreenandRed you are 100% correct , RTE transmission will be Geo Blocked for the duration of its Olympic coverage. In the same way England's International football matches on Channel 4 are blocked in the Republic of Ireland when Virgin Media have secured rights to broadcast it here.
A little over 40 athletes from Northern Ireland will compete in Paris and the majority have opted for Team Ireland. Open to correction but can only think of about 7 opting for Team GB (3 rowers, 2 archers, 1 swimmer and 1 hockey (capt) ) so yes, it would be great for any of their families not already in Paris to have access to the extra focus/build up offered by RTE when an Irish competitor is challenging for a medal ( hopefully Rhys, Daniel, Michaela, Aidan, Rory, Ciara etc)
There is an old fashioned solution for many experiencing this issue and one I recommend to my friends in Northen Ireland when they sometimes get cut off when a GAA match on RTE goes into extra time / pens. Geo blocking occurs on cable, Satellite and relay transmitters based within Northern Ireland. There is a very significant Saorview spill over into Northern Ireland. It's probably no coincidence that the three most powerful 2RN transmitters north of Galway - Dublin line are located on the borders of County Derry (Holywell hill in East Donegal) , Fermanagh (Truskmore in North Sligo) and Armagh/ Down ( Clermont Carn in North Louth).
If you google. 'Saorview , check coverage' you will find that County Armagh has almost 100% Saorview coverage but in Donegal where people are obliged to pay a licence fee you don't even have 80% coverage.
To avail of Saorview signal you need to invest in a good outdoor aerial and coax cable (total cost about £40) and research which direction to point it and whether to have its 'spikes' horizontal or vertical (polarity).
The signal from Clermont beams to Belfast and beyond even to Hollywood although Portaferry being closer but on the other side of the Mourne Mountains could be challenging . A Fire TV Stick would be another option of course.
Let the games begin and good luck to Team Ireland.

Update : This blanking out won't apply to news bulletins with references to the Olympics but still applies to broadcasting live events from Paris.

In fairness they were beaten by a disgraceful decision. Clear knock on before winning Fiji try. Terrible officiating.

The Broadcasting Act 2009 requires RTÉ to provide a public broadcasting service that "will be made available to the whole community on the island of Ireland". They are clearly not fulfilling that commitment.

But broadcasting contracts over rule that.
They can't legally show in the north unless they pay to have the rights in Northern ireland

They can't do that if the BBC hold the Olympics Broadcasting rights in the six counties though RedandBlack.

Well they have plenty of cash for future broadcasting rights after the government gave them that huge handout the other day. Dia sábháil.

RTE are surely taking rights issues to extremes though as they geo block a range of different programmes. They are now going to resume showing RTE News in the North which obviously shows their original decision to stop news broadcasts was unnecessary or wrong.

This is an issue that needs addressed surely as this is creating a hierarchy of Irish citizens. Like when the Kerry v Tyrone All Ireland Semi Final in 2021 went to extra time it was impossible to watch the extra time in the North as the next programme Champions League magazine was geoblocked. RTE and BBC need to make an agreement to resolve this issue.

I thought that too but even the 2 clowns on the panel never mentioned it so I suspected I was wrong… Why on earth have RTE got a Dublin GAA player ( I know she played rugby at one stage ) on the panel when surely a current Irish woman's player could be used…? And don't get me started on the guy with the handle bar moustache….! All they did was praise Fiji…

Here's a different hierarchy that the current situation creates too:

- People in Northern Ireland can expect to see everything RTE has the rights to show in Northern Ireland, all for free. No obligation on them to pay for the service, and no obligation can be introduced, since it's a different jurisdiction.
- People in the Republic of Ireland are legally obliged to pay an annual licence fee to see exactly the same things, or else run the risk of a court appearance and fine.

Yes, the same thing applies in reverse. I don't pay a licence fee to the BBC in the way that you're obliged to. But nor would I complain if the BBC geoblocked a broadcast here, on the grounds of not having the rights to show that thing in the Republic of Ireland.

Ireland were also the better team against New Zealand and lost. Again bad officiating New Zealand should have had a yellow card for the final two minutes. They might have had an easier match against South Africa on paper but then South Africa knocked New Zealand out after New Zealand had beaten them comfortably in the group stages.

Read up on broadcasting laws. Not taking things to extremes. Just showing what they're allowed to

She's a former Irish player and was available to be a pundit. Maybe other rugby players weren't available?
Yeah they praised the Fijians. Nothing wrong with that considering their history and heritage in 7s and how they played.
