Replying To Canuck:  "The success of outside managers at All-Ireland level is dismal. I can speak for my own county. What we won was with Waterford men in charge. 48,59,92,2016 We even won two junior football All-Irelands with our own John Jackson in charge . I don't take pot shots at Davy. He is a great Clare man. Proved it in the field of play and as a manager. However he is not a Waterford man or a Galway man. What does that mean ? Like Cahill when a better offer came along and as door closed behind them they could not give a dam about Waterford hurling or Galway when that happens. They are driven by their own ego to look good. We will have to listen to the rhetoric from Davy how he loves them Waterford players while he will shout insults at them next year if in charge of Galway."
It's very much the case with non top tier teams. The same names going back and forth. Lads with no management experience getting jobs Stephen Molumphy and Michael Fennelly being recent examples of it. In Fennelly case he was still an active player when he took the Offaly job. Would he have done the same if he was managing Kilkenny?

Eamonn Kelly was another. Said he was leaving Offaly because of work etc yet a week later he's announced as the Laois manager.

In the history of the GAA only four "outside" mangers have ever won an All-Ireland. Two each in football and hurling.

Has any county ever actually benefited from Davy Fitz in the long term?

He's a great man for short term success but leaves most in a complete mess once he's got everything he can out of it.

Why does the long term matter though?
Every manager ever has a brief for the 2-3 years they are over these teams. What they do in the interim is up to the manager.
Would anybody in Clare for example swap his 2013 win for the unknown result if he wasn't at the helm?
My big gripe with Davy Fitz is his ability to talk out of about 3-4 different sides of his mouth and talk about an issue while doing the complete opposite in reality.
If he took over Dublin next year say, I think it would give hurling in the capital a huge profile boost.

Well long term would be quite important would it not?

How long for example did it take Waterford to get up and running again after him? Look where Wexford are now.

We will be in div1a next year, missed out on a winnable Leinster Final losing by only a point after a shockingly bad penalty decision, and lost an all ireland QF after having our best player sent off in the first half after receiving 2 yellows, the first of which noone thought was a yellow. We had fought back to be level when this happened, and again in the early part of the 2nd half. This on top of missing our best defender due to injury, and one of our better forwards from last year injured also.
While we aren't winning or even reaching All Ireland finals now, we weren't when Davy was manager either.

You can have the best long term plan in the world and nothing would beat the oxygen of quick success.
We've all seen counties with 10-year plans for the game, but hurling is a game played in 2-3 year cycles.
Waterford were an aging team when he took them them to the All-Ireland in 08 and Wexford (no offence to my adopted county) are aging and re-building with youth at the same time. Wexford, arguably are in a better position than Waterford are right now. Playing 1A hurling next year and in a winnable province. The required commitment is an easier sell to Wexford players than Waterford in my opinion, where in reality Waterford won't come out of Munster.

I would have to totally disagree agree with you my friend. Success is not very often an over night if ever an over night step. As a coach involved in an international sport my experience it is a climbing the ladder rung by rung. You have to get a past the qualifiers, quarters, semi finals and probably lose a final to reach the summit. It is no different in our games. It is now back to square one after two years of Davy's and Cahill's interference. Davy is the first to say give me time in the first year. He did better in the second but then ran like a scalded cat. Like someone said here talks from about four sides of his mouth. This Waterford team is coming to the end of a cycle like the 2008 team. Probably the most talented because they had more strength in dept. Wasted by team managers that came after A Waterford Derek McGrath. Yes Derek run out of town because of his style of play. People forget he turned a bunch of college and minor kids into a team that stopped getting huge beatings. His hated style modified is how the game is now played. Duignan constantly lambasted him for a sweeper. Them lo and behold when commentating a game with two other teams out of his mouth comes "if the don't put a sweeper back there they will be destroyed.

The Round Robin system thus far has not been kind to Waterford. 2024 presented their best chance of securing a top 3 position, the draw with Tipperary proved fatal as it left the door open for us ever so slightly.
I still reckon Waterford have the players to achieve a top 3 finish in Munster, in a game of fine margins, luck, the officials reading of the rules, & getting momentum behind a team all feed into a side getting the best out of themselves.
