The Tackle

The Tackle is re-defined as:

"The Tackle is a skill by which a player may dispossess an opponent or frustrate his objective within the Rules of Fair Play. The tackle is aimed at the ball, not the player. The tackler may use his body to confront the opponent but deliberate bodily contact (such as punching, slapping, armn holding, pushing, tripping, jersey pulling or a full frontal charge) is forbidden. The only deliberate physical contact can be a Fair Charge i.e. Shoulder-to-shoulder with at least one foot on the ground. More than one player can tackle the player in possession.""
The last line there is the problem I think… in my view when more than two players are tackling the player in possession then the advantage should be given to the player with the ball…. When the player in possession gets surrounded with no chance of playing the ball the referee then gives a free against him and this leads to a lot of frustration… If he can't play the ball away with 2 players around him then a free can be rightfully awarded but more than 2 should not be allowed….!

For me, I would change the definition to the below

"The Tackle is a skill by which a player may dispossess an opponent or frustrate his objective within the Rules of Fair Play. The tackle is aimed to dispossess the player. The tackler may use either of the following methods to dispossess the player:
1. Use his body to confront the opponent, while using a single hand to strike the ball free from the players grasp.
2. A deliberate shoulder to shoulder charge (with one foot on the ground, while the player is in an upright position)
3. Use of the "inside arm" to push the players torso, while simultaneously using the outside arm to strike the ball.

The following are prohibited:
a. Deliberate bodily contact (such as punching, slapping, armn holding, pushing, tripping, jersey pulling or a full frontal charge)
a. More than one player tackling the player in possession.

I "think" I like "3" - essentially half an Aussie Rules tackle?

It's actually the Michael Jordan defence in basketball

"with 2 players around him' - why can't he run out between them?

So you agree with players in possession getting surrounded by several players ending with no option but to over carry…? There was some amount of whinging from Kerry folk I remember when Tyrone used the same tactics in an All Ireland final when Kerry got turned over… My suggestion might have helped you somewhat there if it had been a rule… no..?

He shouldn't have brought it into that contact in the 1st place

The whole idea should be to play the ball to a free colleague rather than holding the ball till you get surrounded.

It happens regularly when a player makes a catch… comes down and gets surrounded… are you new to the game by any chance…?

Any chance you would answer my question?

Why would any good player kick a ball to a lad surrounded as you say by 2 or more markers? Surely if that lad had 2 or more markers then there would be other lads not being marked. If you were a doctor you would be prescribing make-up for measles.

Loads of players nowadays gain possession and are quickly surrounded by numerous players or have you not seen a game lately…? I think you might need the doctor yourself

If a player in possession is quickly surrounded and dispossessed that's surely good defending?!

I think they are changing way too many things, I do think that one change would nearly fix the whole lot, if you made the full forward and full back line stay inside the 22 it would just lead to a better flow and more shape to the game, teams couldn't go ultra defensive and you wouldn't need half the other rules,

If that's the sort of football you enjoy so be it… If only two players were allowed tackle the player in possession then surely it would make for a more free flowing game… no..?
