The Rise Of Offaly Hurling

Offaly u20s in to the Leinster final. They'll play Wexford. Offaly have come from tier 2 in Leinster so we're forced to win a group of 4, then a qf and semi.

Congrats to Offaly under 20s on last night's defeat of Dublin. I'd fancy them to win the final against the Cats too, Coming nicely under the radar similar to the minors last year.

Dreadful display by Dublin but much of that was due to Offaly's control of the game with and against a very strong win. Good luck in final.

Last year was a good one for Offaly minors, this year looks promising for their u20s and are now in to the Leinster final, their seniors are on the cusp of clinching the Joe Mc Donagh cup, it's all going well for Offaly hurling at the min, I think it's now safe to make them favourites.

Sorry.... Wexford! Stockholm syndrome about the stripey men :-)

Well done to Wexford too. Sounded like a cracker.

I'm not sure being in Tier 2 was really that much of a disadvantage; if you're a Tier 1 calibre team, then you should breeze through Tier 2 with no issues.

But the format is itself a bit stupid and the Wexford/Galway/Kilkenny/Dublin group was a bit of a Phoney War as there was a complete lack of jeopardy.

2 groups of 4 would be my proposal, with the 1st in each group going to the SFs and 2nd then playing off against 3rd in the other group.

Could have groups like this:

Wexford
Dublin
Galway
Laois

Offaly
Kilkenny
Westmeath
Antrim

Galway definitely found themselves more 'jeopardy' than they could handle in that competition 2023. Lost more games in it, than they didn't lose. Good job there was no relegation, or dare I say, reelection!!

I would say it's a major disadvantage, After winning 4 games to get to preliminary QF Offaly have to beat 3 "tier 1" on their first go to win the championship. The tier 1 teams have to beat only 2 tier 1 teams.

Wexford could win the Championship having only beaten 1 tier one team (Kilkenny) and 2 tier 2 teams (Offaly and Westmeath). Wexford also lost to Galway and Dublin.

Offaly beat Westmeath, Antrim, Meath and Kildare who are tier 2, and Beat Galway and Dublin who are tier 1.

Wexford beat Kilkenny, lost to Galway and Dublin. Finished bottom of group. Beat Westmeath who are tier 2. Beat Kilkenny.

So essentially to make the final Wexford (or any tier 1 teams) only had to beat a tier 2 team in the QF and a tier 1 team in the SF. Offaly had to beat 4 tier 2 teams and 2 tier 1 teams

Your teamwork, gameplans, and big game experience are therefore far ahead of ours. On top of the fact that you beat 2 teams, Dublin and Galway, that beat us. Thats why down here many of us have you as favourites.

I did say previously that it was absurd system and while I am disappointed that Dublin did not at least reach the final - and they were very much fancied - Offaly are to be commended highly on what they have don in both 20s and senior this year.

(My goodwill might not survive a possible prelim senior quarter final :-)

Hopefully Offaly will get a big support for their first ever McDonagh final and the home preliminary quarter-final to follow.

If Offaly win the Leinster U20 final, the Offaly senior hurlers in the McDonagh final will be curtain raiser for their U20 team in the U20 All-Ireland final?

That's not the problem. It's that these would be two finals that Offaly would very much like to win. And there are some guys who Offaly would like available for both matches.

Hogansatnd now reporting offaly will ask for a U20 postponement if they win Leinster.

Sensible. The McDonagh final however will be on its own in Croke Park. Not ideal either but what can they do?
