The Rise Of Offaly Hurling

Might make more sense in the medium-term if Leinster was increased to eight teams. Could have two groups of four, with the two group winners going straight to the Leinster Semi-Finals, 2nd playing off against 3rd in the other group and vice-versa, and 4th playing off against 4th in a relegation play-off. Could maybe then get rid of the Lory Meagher at the bottom end of the system.

The reality is that five of the top 7 counties are in Munster, has been that way for last 10-15 years, Wexford and Dublin are well off the pace and are closer to Antrim, Westmeath and Offaly than they are to Clare, Waterford and Tipp. That's no one's fault except their own.

All provinces have the equality that the top 5 retain provincial status. Whoever finishes 6th in the 6 team championship is relegated."
Are Kerry people actually happy with this, though? If Kerry win Joe Mc they will almost certainly be beaten in all five matches the following year and immediately be relegated. Surely it would be better for their development to play in Munster continuously for a few years, without any relegation?

Waterford are no better than Antrim or Westmeath at the moment. If they lose all 4 they should go down

Munster works well because it is pretty well matched. However, there ought to be a relegation element, even just for form's sake. Kerry should be eligible for promotion to Munster if winning McDonagh.

What's the alternative? There needs to be the reality of 5 tough lessons learned before a return to the McDonagh. The hope would be to learn from the experience for the next time and close the gap as much as possible. I don't see Kerry on that trajectory at the moment though. Kerry have been consistently ranked the 13th team for 3 years in a row. I haven't seen anything to suggest they can take 12th yet.

Joining Munster permanently? Or for a trial period of 3 years? The second tier counties need regular matches against the top teams. Recently Kerry have only been getting a few Munster SHL games against other top counties and these are only early season matches and lack a degree of intensity. If Kerry are going to be relegated straight back to Joe Mc I don't really see the point in them getting promoted at all.

Antrim will be top 5 or relegated this year. Those conditions will also apply to Kerry if they ever win the McDonagh.

How beneficial is just 1 season playing the top counties though?

It has to be earned on the field of play. If Kerry are 6th in Munster, we will take our medicine.

Yes but you aren't going to improve much after only 1 year. And you might not get back up again for years.

If Kerry, Antrim, Offaly came into Munster this year, they would be destroyed,if any of the big Munster 5 were in the macdonagh cup, they would walk it,this is not having a go at lenister or those counties but it's fact,if Kerry win the macdonagh cup,yes I believe they should be promoted but to the Munster or Leinster championship,I don't know, the problem is we 9 top counties,6 next level and so on with no change coming.

I know but is it not better for there to be one more second tier county to be getting regular game time against the top teams? If Kerry got a good stint in Munster I suspect it would be of a lot more benefit to them than staying in Joe Mc

Waterford top 7 team? They are horrendous this last two years.

Wexford barely lost to Clare last year in the All Ireland q-final last year.

Clare got their arses handed to them v Kilkenny by a cricket score in the semi final.

Wexford, Dublin, Clare and Waterford and even Antrim are up there now and all are of a fairly similar standard on any given day.

Westmeath & Offaly bar the odd result are light years behind that standard and are Joe McDonagh cup level of truth be told.

If Waterford keep going on this downward spiral, Kerry could possibly have a right cut off then in Tralee in a year or 2 with Kerry hurling out of their skins.

Given how small Kerry's pick is and how little exposure they have to the top teams that seems a bit absurd.

Well, I think that Waterford are better than both Westmeath and Antrim, but the gap has closed considerably from say 2017/2018. So, Waterford better be careful that they don't get relegated or 'go down' as you call it, to the Leinster hurling championship where both Antrim and Westmeath admirably parade their wares at the moment.

And by extension, if Waterford were to be taken out of the Golden Vale of hurling, the only county to replace them that wouldn't downturn the standard, quality, and prestige of the most southern province could only be Kilkenny. And they'd be no addition actually, as their supporters can barely make it to Dublin as it is. Imagine asking a Kilkenny fan to find his way to Ennis or PUC. He'd have a smile on his face as broad and gleaming as ever the smile we saw on Brian Cody's face.

Most Antrim people I know thought they left the game against Cork behind them last year.

Kerry have to earn the right for Division 1 hurling and more exposure at the top level. Due to the pandemic championships, last year was the first time Kerry got to contest a preliminary quarter-final. Leinster are accomodating of Kerry at minor and U20 level. It's over to Kerry.
