Kildare were in the Ring Cup last year. Offaly have been down there previously. Meath are down there this year. It's a bit harsh to be relegating these counties from the McDonagh Cup which could be expanded. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8773 - 21/02/2023 12:55:27 2459577 Link 0 |
Why do you think a team that wins at their level and gains promotion needs a lifeline?

no theres enough teams getting a go, its generous enough giving the mcdonagh runners up a go, leave it at that preddan (Kildare) - Posts: 801 - 21/02/2023 14:40:28 2459603 Link 2 |
By this logic the Nicky Rackard etc winners should be left do the same thing. oneoff (UK) - Posts: 1617 - 21/02/2023 16:05:47 2459630 Link 1 |
It's either that or expand the McDonagh Cup to 8 teams. Lower ranked counties get an unfair deal. Division 1 in hurling has 2 groups. Division 2 could have 2 groups as well with both finalists promoted.

The likes of Meath and Derry should be in an expanded McDonagh Cup. If the GAA are unwilling to expand the McDonagh, another solution must be found to throw these counties a lifeline.

The line has to be drawn somewhere: Top 3 in provincial groups. The top 2 in the McDonagh. The winner of the Ring Cup. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8773 - 21/02/2023 18:15:42 2459662 Link 0 |

Think it could be a chastening experience for the winners. Joe McD is a higher grade of championship.

Just as the provincial championships are a higher grade of hurling. Should the likes of Offaly, Meath and Kildare be relegated to the Ring or should the McDonagh expand? McDonagh and Ring counties deserve fairness.

Yes it does. But not by letting the winners of one grade bypass everyone else.

I think after the last few years we would be better following the old system or football system tbh. Only with a 6 team division 1, 6 team division 2, basically the old 1a and 1b, 6 team division 3, 6 team division 4 and/or however many is need so all counties that want to field a League team have a level to play at.

The McDonagh Cup could expand to 8 teams as follows: legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8773 - 22/02/2023 10:55:26 2459727 Link 1 |
Then I would think it would be necessary to combine the Christy Ring with the Nicky Rackard cos if you take 2 teams out of the Ring and put them in the McDonagh the Ring wouldnt be much of a competition with so few teams left in it.

This response is one I agree with. The Christy Ring top team should not supercede the McDonagh Cup winner.

Yeah, that should be part of an ongoing assessment of the various tiers. It's unfair on Meath and any of the current McDonagh teams to be threatened with relegation unless warranted.

I think the big issue is the 5 tiers and it's 4 tiers to divide 20 teams. Would seem like a top tier plus 3 tiers of 8 would be more than enough. Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 4519 - 23/02/2023 10:20:04 2459842 Link 0 |
Where do you draw the line on what's warranted? No team is going to think getting relegated is warranted. If you just keep taking teams out of the Christy Ring there's no point in having it. oneoff (UK) - Posts: 1617 - 23/02/2023 10:35:01 2459848 Link 0 |
Offaly and Kildare were too strong for the Christy Ring in recent years. Meath will probably be too strong this year. Where a clear pattern emerges over 3 years, there should be a reassessment of the tiered boundaries. The current Christy Ring runner-up will gain more from joining Meath and the McDonagh counties for a year than the relegated McDonagh team will get in the Ring. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8773 - 23/02/2023 11:09:49 2459857 Link 0 |
It took Offaly two attempts to win the Christy Ring so they weren't obviously too strong the first year. Kildare are only in recent years after getting back on track and obviously haven't been strong enough to stay in the McDonagh cup. Carlow had dropped back down to the Christy Ring in recent years and whst did they do? Regrouped win it and then won the McDonagh cup. In your system they should have just been left in the McDonagh cup. oneoff (UK) - Posts: 1617 - 23/02/2023 12:46:50 2459876 Link 0 |
