I wouldn't read too much into 2020. The intention should be to grow the McDonagh to 8, 10 and eventually 12 teams. As a compromise however, the McDonagh might have to relinquish the preliminary quarter-finals.

Why not? You can't just dismiss it because it doesn't suit your point. By increasing the number of McDonagh cup teams you're just going to make the other grades weaker. Who's going to benefit from it? oneoff (UK) - Posts: 1617 - 23/02/2023 16:43:00 2459914 Link 0 |
This is like Football's flawed Proposal B 'Team 6' issue on steroids.

That's a fair point too. The McDonagh started out with 5 and expanded to 6. A 6th team is allowed in Munster or Leinster. The ultimate plan in hurling should be to return to 3 or 4 tiers, but only if merited. The McDonagh should expand to 8.

From what I remember the reason there's 6 on it was because Antrim weee just going to be put straight into it without having won the Christy Ring and Meath, rightly, complained about it at the time.

However it came about, expanding to 6 was the correct decision. Considering the development of the current McDonagh counties and Meath, an expansion to 8 will be a fair level of competition for all involved, especially for the current Ring runners-up.

Carlow never slipped down to the Christy Ring, it was was preceeded the McDonagh Cup. Carlow were the first winners of the McDonagh. I don't disagree with your point but just wanted to clarify that.
