Only coming to this now as am still absolutely sickened over yesterday. It's 45 years since my father first brought me to see Wexford play, and in all that time, I genuinely can't think of a worse day.

Anyway, no point dwelling any more on yesterday. Am instead looking ahead to next weekend and the different permutations. Can't get away from thinking how Antrim v Dublin finishing in a draw back in Round 1 seemed fairly inconsequential at the time, but is massively significant now. Basically, if Dublin had won that game, we'd still be safe from relegation, no matter what might happen next Sunday.

Remember that if three teams finish level on points, it's only the results between them that count for score difference. So, if Dublin had beaten Antrim:
- we'd be on 2 points, a +2 score difference in that 'mini league' of the three teams, and finished in it
- Westmeath would be on 2 points, a +2 score difference, with a game to come
- Antrim would be on 0 points right now, with a -4 score difference, and a game to come

It means that even in Antrim were to beat Westmeath, so that all three teams finished on 2 points, there'd be no way possible for us to finish bottom of the three teams on score difference.

But the draw that Antrim got v Dublin means they'd instead move to 3 points if they win next Sunday, and that would put us down if we don't get at least a draw v Kilkenny.

I'll still be there to support the team next Sunday, but I'm hugely pessimistic about our chances.

Sweet Jesus it's obsessing about the past rather than the opposite that has us in this mess to begin with."
So tell me what management team would you have in there. I really look forward to your answer. The top two managers in the country at the present time played in the 80s and the 90 s Brian lohan kevin mc stay. Ans who ever said anything about lacing ball down to the full forward line hurling in leinster back in the nineties was a mans game the way munster is now. .Sounds like you were not around at that time to witness a proper mans game.So tearintom i look forward to hearing your management team.

Poor Jonno, ruined a legendary night's 'handiwork' that late 'smash & grab!!!'.

Offaly u20 down to 14 men and what does Rossiter do on the line. Wexford play with 2 Sweepers . He spent to much time working under Davy ."
That's nonsense

You obviously didn't go to the game yesterday. In the 1st half we had Conor Devitt as a spare man. In the 2nd half we went 15 on 15. I know which half I enjoyed watching more.

Who were the 2 sweepers? I watched every second of that game from the halfway line and watched it back on tg4. At no stage did we have 2 sweepers.

No Munster team has played 3 forwards inside the whole game in years now.

I'd have been shocked if he did. He has pretty much zero experience in a manager role outside of club underage and primary school teams.
He was part of Sheedys backroom that had a panel which were desperately unfit for all to see. Cant see him ever getting the Tipp job tbh.
Be interesting to see what the reaction is next week. If they stay up then you'd imagine Joe Fortune might be the obvious choice?

Right lads, sickened after yesterday BUT its all about Sunday now, one last chance to retain McCarthy Cup status.
Lets leave the post mortems and recriminations for another day. Time for one last rally to the flag.

I don't really see how taking issue with one U20 game out of 14 years worth of games really makes a difference to the argument I made

Replying To ElGranSenor:  "If we're focusing on under-age, I think we're better off focusing on U20 results and not Minor. Galway win the All-Ireland Minor every second year yet have only won one Senior All-Ireland in the last 30 years. On the flip side, Clare got their backsides handed to them at Minor level by Cork in 2021 yet went very close to them last week at U20.

I think it makes sense to use Kilkenny as a barometer at U20. I'm not saying they've been wonderful but they still generally are one of the better teams in the country consistently.

2010: Wexford lose to Dublin AET in Leinster Final; probably at least as good as KK that year
2011: Beat KK in LQF, lose by 10 to Dublin in LF
2012: Lose heavily to a very good KK side in LSF; a decent few Wexford hurlers did end up coming from that side though
2013: Beat KK in LF
2014: Beat KK easily in LQF; win Leinster
2015: Beat KK heavily in LF
2016: Lose to Dublin in LQF but a lot of good players end up coming from this side
2017: Lose heavily to KK in the LF, only Cathal Dunbar emerged from the 1996s
2018: Lose to Galway by a point in the LF; probably around KK's level; had they had U21 the following year, I think we'd likely have won Leinster
2019: Lose to KK by 2 points in the LF; quite a poor crop though
2020: Lose by 8 points to Dublin in the LQF; quite a poor side again
2021: Lose to Kildare in the LPQF; very poor crop
2022: Lose to KK by a point in the LF; KK win the AI
2023: Lose to Offaly by 2 points in the LF; beat Kilkenny in the LSF

I accept that the above is not All-Ireland winning form but 2019-2021 aside, it should still be good enough to be relatively competitive with KK at Senior level IMO. Could we do better at underage level? Absolutely. Are our underage crops dire? Not really (Barring our current 22yos, 23yos, and 24yos).

I don't want to be here taking a deliberately rosy-eyed view of proceedings and I understand that people are very angry right now. But I don't think everything is quite as bad as some make it out to be. Under-age processes take time to implement and moreover, they take time to bear fruit. We won't really know how good/bad our U14s are until they are U20 in all honesty"
Respectfully this Wexford obsession with Kilkenny seems to be part of the problem. In the list of years from 2010-2022, KK won 1 AI U20, not exactly a high winning standard. Looking from the outside in, I don't think the Wexford players are as bad as are being suggested here but maybe a year in Joe McDonagh might be what's needed for Wexford hurling. Either way if that's what happens it'll be a sad day for hurling.

Yep let's go back to 96, you're the one claiming that's what we need to do so who are you getting in?

Loan and Mc Stay are very good managers and what's more they have the managerial cv to back it up. Who from 96 has anything remotely similar.

So who from 96 matches them? Or is it just being part of 96 good enough because it was a man's game! It's a different sport to back in 96, anyone can see that, the final was one where both teams had 14 scores! County teams and club teams are racking that up by half time! The ground hurling of those days is done, it's an entirely different ball game

But as usual it's the same bull, let's get someone in from 96?

Maybe ask liam Griffin sure while you're at it?

As for going forward rather than our chairman and executives starting rows with the likes of Joe Fortune on the sideline maybe ask him would he be interested in the job? We havent beaten westmeath in 2 years since hes came in. But maybe he's not man enough seeing as he was only 18 in 1996?

Pair him up with Rossiter and start from there.

Replying To beano:  "Yesterday was historically bad. Westmeath's first championship win over us since 1940. To put that into perspective, it predates the emergence of Rackard (who made his intercounty hurling debut in '42) and the revolution that followed. In fact, we were still more of a footballing entity then. It's without doubt the darkest day in Wexford hurling history from a results point of view.

We can point to how competitive we are vs. Kilkenny at underage throughout a specific timeframe, but it's the fortunes of the seniors that puts bums on seats and what is remembered in the record books, and this year has been nothing short of an unmitigated disaster.

You have the county board organising a fundraiser for the senior hurlers holiday fund last month (oh sorry a training camp), asking supporters to dip into our pockets again after the release of a limited edition jersey (in time for Christmas) and other such commercial ventures. There should be a ban on all foreign excursions now for a couple of years until they achieve something tangible.

We had the county board chairman on SE radio in the aftermath of the Offaly under-20 game condemning our lack of support, but I didn't hear of any free buses for school-going kids or anything like that for the occasion (which Offaly have been excellent at pushing). Besides, it's the height of communion season, I'm sure families have enough on their plates.

No doubt in a couple of weeks, we will be "market-leaders" in getting the club championships up and running. We'll get it run off in time for Leinster they'll say, when equally important for the brand will be having the TG4 live spot for the senior hurling final again.

Nevermind a review of football in the county, which is needed, a full review of all structures needs to be conducted. At least our senior footballers seem to have tactical flexibility and appear to be playing for their manager, a Wexford native no less."
I wasn't suggesting that everything was A-OK at Senior level because it clearly isn't. I was just trying to point out that whilst we mightn't necessarily have All-Ireland-winning talent coming through, the talent we do have *should* be capable of a lot better than what they showed yesterday

Westmeath were the ones playing the sweeper in the first half, not us. Most of the time, they only had one forward inside our 45

DF certainly had a good sense of timing but he did make us competitive immediately. In Liam Dunnes last season, we were humiliated by KK, another downing tools job, and Waterford beat us in second gear in Thurles. There was a bad hiding by a limited enough Limerick team in Thurles the year before too.

U20 is still a long way from senior but I'd like to see likes of Mahon, Roche, Carley, Byrne, Whelan, O'Hagan in the 26 next season. To do that we will need to clear out some of the senior squad, really think we are in dire need of what Liam Cahill did when he went to Waterford first. Absolutely ruthless letting likes of Connors and Shanahan go.

Yes that's why Conor was the spare man. In the 2nd half they didn't play a sweeper. But maybe we should have, never mind having Joe Fortune set our team up for us.
Without a sweeper we scored the amazing total of 7 points in that 2nd half, missed a penalty and tried to go for 7 or 8 goals when Westmeath had a load of defenders in the way. FFS we'd be telling our u12s to take their point if there are 2 defenders in there, never mind 4 or 5.
