IMO penalties is awful way to decide GAA match. The loser missing out on Croke park in that manner? Next week was free and a replay should have been played in Sligo next weekend instead.

Sligo, Cavan, Westmeath, and Offaly are through to the semi-finals. A nice mix of teams from the divisions so just shows you that the gap between 3 and 4 isn't big.

Losing on penalties is awful in any sport but it is the fairest way to decide a game if it is a draw. There is no time anymore for replays unless it is an All-Ireland final. They tried free taking and the players didn't like it. Free taking might work in hurling though.

May I ask why you predicted that Fermanagh would beat Cavan? Just interested in the logic used. Thanks.

You can hardly have one set of rules where you have a fallow week, and not in other games where you don't. It's finish on the day and that's that. We all knew from the start of the year. Otherwise the winner could be out 4 weeks in a row (5 if they got drawn in the preliminary).

not at all, great stuff, and if you loose a game in normal time the chances are some of the players have missed frees anyway so whats the differance?

What a great competition. On the whole highly competitive games. Disappointed we didn't have more focus towards performing last week. The game was there for the taking again Leitrim.

I agree. A disgraceful way to determine winning or losing a game. Either add more extra time (not my choice, but if so allow unlimited substitutions) or #1 choice a replay. The worst of what is now football has been copied from other sports.

Sligo, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan. Cavan are probably favourites. The semi final draw will be interesting.

By all accounts anyway, Leitrim were robbed. Did I hear they had a goal in extra time disallowed for square ball, and he was nowhere near inside the square when it was played? Harsh if the case

I guess the only alternatives would be to play an extra period of extra time or a golden score which I recall was used in some underage matches quite a few years ago….can be exciting but equally heartbreaking for the losers … no easy solution

Offaly were in Division 2. Westmeath just missed out on promotion to Division 2. Sligo are dogged and getting through the rounds so far.

Offaly v Westmeath, Cavan v Sligo.
Offaly v Sligo, Westmeath v Cavan.
Westmeath v Sligo, Offaly v Cavan.

Whatever way the draws goes tomorrow, they'll all fancy their chances of getting through to the final.
Semi-finals in Croke Park and live on RTÉ television. The final in Croke Park and live on RTÉ television. Reward of Sam Maguire 16 qualification for the Tailteann winner. A lot to play for over the coming weeks.

The latest thing people complain about for the sake of it.

People complained for years about replays saying it was just the GAA looking to make more money. Now something has been brought in to stop it and people are still not happy.

Penalties not a nice way to lose but the structure was made clear from the outset to ensure the seasons could be condensed and give the clubs some good summer months for fixtures.

This is a pointless debate. These rules were brought in a long time ago. Probably not fair but so be it. There isn't time in the condensed calendar for replays. Remember when there used to be replays everyone said the ref wanted a replay because it would mean more money for the GAA. You can't win
