An Ulster title 4 All Ireland quarter finals and a well contested All Ireland semi final. Derry have a bit to go yet to match that. You'll know all about struggling in Division One next year. Best of luck in the final next week. Monaghan won it in 2014.

Significant additional funding as a result of div.1 status which gets poured into the clubs and county facilities. Good to see the green eyed monsters coming out though after today

Well done to the players, they dug deep. Super job. Still think management are poor. Their team selections for other games was debatable and got us into this dog fight no doubt I'll get slatted for been negative against them but don't care.

Always remember the real pressure comes in year 2/3/4 when the surprise is gone, where the real teams step up and play at the top table, lets see how much pressure are in your tyres after a few years of spitting on your hands.

If today proved anything, it's that form is temporary, but class is permanent. It's likely Mansys last ever league game, and keeping us up is a fitting legacy. Thanks Conor!

Great outcome.
Staying up again, when so many had written this panel off.
Well done all.

Such a massive result for a side in transition. On balance better to blood new players in div 1. You go to div 2 and div 3 and the B championship is on horizon. May still come in a few years but this buys mgmt time to build a team. That team this year missing fair few regulars who are in prime kearns ryan mc woods so confidence newer players will take from today is huge.

Well thankfully you're not the manager.

I must admit I thought relegation was a certainty this morning, but what a result. Well done Vinny and Co but there is some serious work to do for championship.
Stopped for a pint in Cootehill on the way back from Castlebar (it would be rude not to). Jaysis it was a tasty one.

What more can you say about Mansy, one of the very best forwards of his era and one who would have succeeded in any era or team. Barely featured all league, comes in for his first start today in a must win game - and he racks up 1-7 with 5 from play. It'll be a sad day when he hangs them up

Delighted for all the lads, but especially Vinny. It was a thankless job to take over Monaghan right now with a right bit of work and transition to do - nevermind the fact Vinny has no actual managerial experience - but he and the lads dug it out at the end. There wouldn't be many in Monaghan football who would command more respect than Vinny, and you could see that at the end when the players went to him. He has blooded an awful lot of young players, alot more than previous managers, and hopefully that will pay dividends down the line.

Long way to go for him to build something new with this team, but keeping Monaghan up straight away when everyone was writing us off from the start, that's something to build on .

Great post- What a day for the county. Would of thought we would be relegated yesterday morning but here we are sitting pretty for another year. Good to see the team out enjoying themselves last night. Well deserved beers and I am sure they will be back in training tomorrow night.

One thing has to be admired about Monaghan is the grit and fight in them year after year when push comes to shove. Yes it wasn't a great league campaign but look at the amount of new faces we have got jerseys onto. Young lads making their mark, older men getting deserved rest and on the final day of the league producing your best display with a mixtures of youth and experience. VC got the backing of his boys today and mainly his club man Conor McManus.

What a performance!! Probably his most stand out display in a few years. He appeared against Tyrone kicking 4 points in the second half and then yesterday kicking 1-7. Aged 35 and still pulling out a performance like that against Padraig O Hara is impressive. His finger to the crowd after netting the penalty reels in the years of all those clutch moments when he won games for us. That win yesterday meant a lot to him and he would bend over backwards for VC I am sure. He deserves every bit of credit going for what he has done, and this goes for Darren Hughes, Karl O Connell, Beggan, Wylie also. Hughes and Wylie were like men possessed yesterday. Brilliant. It is a pity this game was not live or available in full to watch again.

Lets get back to business and look forward to Tyrone with an inch in their step after that gritty performance yesterday.

Totally agreed on McManus, like Corey himself said "when you need a man, he is the man".

To think there were some complete idiots on this thread saying that him and the other old heads needed to be pushed off the panel boggles the mind. These good men stood their ground and flexed their muscles around the Christmas to make sure a proper manager was put in place and they've backed him and trusted in his plan since. The old heads steadied the ship as the league progressed and provided that bit of extra quality that'll allow the younger lads to continue to cut their teeth at the top table next year. By the time the likes of McManus and O'Connell step away the likes of O'Toole, Irwin, Jones, Gallagher, McPhillips, Bannigan and Mohan will hopefully be comfortable enough to carry on the torch. As for the history books, no matter how we done it or what detractors will say - Monaghan will have spent a decade at the top table in football and for a small county who've been written off time and again, that is some achievement for ALL the players and the managers.

One man that I do fear cannot be replaced and deserves singling out above others is Darren Hughes. He's almost single handedly been the replacement for likes of Drew, Corey, JP Mone, Dick and Lennon. Wherever there's been a job to do for Monaghan over the last 10 years, Hughes was the man sent to do it and he done it manfully - be it rain, sun, sleet or snow. At full back, 6 or around the Middle he's always been able to grab a game by the scruff of the neck and drive the whole team on. There is no doubt in my mind that we would have beat Armagh in Blayney at the start of the league if he was available that day - he's the bedrock that all of Monaghan's success in the league and in ulster over the last 10 years has been built on. There are a lot of boys with medals in their pockets and awards on their shelves that should be quietly thanking Hughes for all his work in helping them get there.

So with the league finished up for the year and division one status secured let's look forward to the first round of the championship against Tyrone.
Nothing going to be easy here as usual, Tyrone have been picking up momentum there this last 3/4 games where they have got big results so they will be well primed for us coming to town.

What is our expected starting 15 for this game. A few head scratchers after the last few games in the league. Do we start McManus or take him on in the last 20? Few big decisions for VC and his team. Hopefully we get any niggles of injuries cleared up and have a full bill of health going to Omagh.
