I take it the above is a wind up. He has managed at all levels of Monaghan football starting with Truagh in Senior then on to Sean Mc Dermotts in junior where he brought them on to an unlikely intermediate championship final narrowly losing out by a point. I think that would give him a fair view of all levels of senior football within the county. He then went onto the county minors where he won an ulster title in his first year and if I'm right got to another ulster final. At what stage does a name become big enough in Monaghan football. Instead of developing our young talent while still trying to stay competitive we have went down the money route of throwing cash at a so called big name in order to appease the few. Send us on G Brennans achievements in management please.. footyfan1 (Monaghan) - Posts: 39 - 30/08/2022 12:19:38 2439142 Link 2 |
So any form of experience (1 year coaching with Carlow) at senior inter county level trumps everyone else? If we're using that as a the basis going forward then the likes of Micky Harte, Jim Gavin, Padraic Joyce, Dooher wouldn't have been given a chance because they didn't manage another senior county team.

maybe instead of arguing we should be grateful somebody is taking on the role. We're in a better position than we were this time last week. When is it to be announced? Need to sign him up before he gets scared off like the other pair! MalsBalls (Monaghan) - Posts: 220 - 30/08/2022 14:21:27 2439165 Link 0 |
I saw his style in the minors and there was absolutely no problem with it. He wasn't managing the 20s! Also you're incorrect saying he hasn't managed senior players in club. Which leads me to think you don't know what you're talking about. I was talking about Counihans backroom team as a whole getting the nod, not just one man. Brennan as it stands doesn't have a backroom team. It's hardly a description of the best setup, that you say the players are demanding.

I wish Ger Brennan well but this appointment doesn't sit well as it is basically like the days of getting colm coyle in and sends a very negative message for future coaches in the county esp at underage level. It would be different if we were taking in external mger like malachy who did impressive things at county and club level before being appointed but this just smacks of an inferiority complex regarding gaa in the county that we are some all ireland winner from dublins first gig at this level. You'd expect div 4 teams to go for this kind of thing not us as you'd thought we had progressed from those days. This group of players look to have got what they wanted a manager with all ireland winning experiences to mix with as they see themselves beyond guys like counihan but monaghan gaa when the fall back down the divisions does happen and the current crop of senior players are gone will be glad of men in the county willing to get involved again as clearly they are not wanted at this time. seanie08 (Monaghan) - Posts: 1880 - 30/08/2022 15:43:52 2439177 Link 4 |

Any word on Ger Brennan's backroom team? Farney (Monaghan) - Posts: 814 - 30/08/2022 16:42:33 2439184 Link 0 |
Counihan was never over the 20s, goes to show how much you know about what's coming out of your mouth. He also won a ulster minor title playing excellent football, again, you obviously never seen them kick a ball to come out with that statement. He's also managed both Truagh and Seam McDermotts seniors players, again, you've no idea what your talking about. Brennan has 1 year senior intercounty experience as a coach so he's got as much experience in this role as Counihan & Sherlock……. NONE The only accurate piece in your comment was we have talent coming through, that's correct. Which is exactly why we needed a internal candidate that knows them players which, as co minor manager for 5 years Counihan does. Brennan neither knows or will care about developing a 19-21 year old outside of the panel. Brennan has made this very clear already, he has a completely external backroom team, no Monaghan man to help identify possible additions to the squad. The question I have is why?? I know if I was a 30+ aged player in that squad the last thing I'd want is a manager coming in planning for the future and parking me on the bench, coincidence that it is these such players who opposed Counihan and personally approached Brennan.. I think not. Blueblood4life (Monaghan) - Posts: 200 - 30/08/2022 16:53:07 2439186 Link 1 |

Would make a good reality TV show the search for a manager day 66.

Maybe Malachy O'Rourke will be back to tidy up some unfinished business. PolicemanFox (Monaghan) - Posts: 191 - 01/09/2022 12:45:56 2439303 Link 0 |
The main issue for Counihan was that the older players simply would not have any respect for him - these are guys who have bags full of Senior medals at both club and county level, whereas I don't believe Counihan has a single medal as a player or manager at division 1 senior football. Winners gravitate towards other winners, and with so many teams managed he really should have more cups than a one off win. If he couldn't get this job then predictably he'll fall back into the club game, probably having to go back to his own club which would be further evidence that he's just not the right man for this job, at this level.

Mal got out when the going was good. He'd wanna be mad to jump back in with these boys the way they are carrying on. Co Board & Players that is. Blueblood4life (Monaghan) - Posts: 200 - 01/09/2022 13:25:40 2439309 Link 0 |
I may be wrong here but has Counihan not got a club All Ireland medal? Any of the current lads have one in along with those "bags full of medals"? Standing up for players or allowing them dictate terms is what got us in this position in the first place, few lads on their last legs wanted Banty gone and now the same boys aren't happy when the cream of the crop aren't kicking down the door to get coaching them. The players of Monaghan have now created a reputation of being untrustworthy, disloyal, selfish and egotistical, hardly what a incoming Manager wants outta his players. The unfortunate thing is this is a select few, I'm hearing a handful, who are blackening the name of the entire panel. I'd hope the other men not involved would stand up and be counted, rid the squad of these elitist few and perhaps the job becomes more attractive because at the minute it's anything but.
