Knoxboya would you like to address my main point rather than lament my typo mistakes. Sitting on the fence?

I think McManus and McCarron are the only real forward you could say are guaranteed 3 or more points a game. All the others are good players but not as prolific. Mooney and Garland might come into this category in time and that's probably the breakthrough type of player Monaghan need to see. Freeman handed over to McManus to McCarron... Who's next? I agree with a earlier point about having big players but also think in the modern game you need big (6ft 3" plus) or medium (6ft to 6ft 2") athletic players rather big lumps who can't move. Garlands 25/26.. not exactly coming into the category ..

As I said in my earlier post, for me it was more an issue of Kerry's defence.

I thought he was 24ish... I can't understand how he is so well got in college but it hasn't happened for him with Monaghan senior team. I'm hoping he does get 1-3 someday and doesn't look back because he is very talented. I remember feeling the same about Conor McCarthy awhile back and then I think he won a Sigerson (or certainly had a very good college season) and the next year really started coming into it with Monaghan. So here's hoping! MrPBoylan (Monaghan) - Posts: 112 - 07/02/2024 07:49:27 2524854 Link 0 |
Garland is probably too small for inter County football in the inside forward line unless he does a Mccarthy and reinvents as a half back can't see him being an option. Sean Jones Conor Leonard have had some really bad luck with injuries which is a pity as they both look the part at this level. seanie08 (Monaghan) - Posts: 1799 - 07/02/2024 11:34:44 2524890 Link 0 |
Last year of minor was 2016. College ball is different. Inter county is where the big boys play… I'd say the ship has sailed

Is Leonard available this year if fit? He could make a huge difference to the balance of the panel

Regardless of where you are from, you have an obvious bias against McCarron which sometimes clouds any fair or logical debate. Mc Carron was good on Sunday and I would suggest is our most important player at the moment to bring an air of calmness and experience at a time when we have so many young inexperienced lads in the forward line, he can play inside or come out in a role of distributor, not many can do it. I agree with others that our forwards have been more impressive than our backs so far in the league, your obvious dislike for Mc Carron is clouding your judgement Garland has a lot of attributes that he does not maximise at County level, his low centre of gravity, ball carrying ability and speed especially, he needs to be more selfish and less selfless IMO, like at club level. take it up hard and fast himself rather than often looking for a colleague. I would stick with him for another game or two, but he has to be a lot more direct and aggressive. I like the look of Irwin especially his attitude on the ball, it seems to stick and he can win his own ball too. Midfield is still our main issue going forward IMO mhunicean_abu (Monaghan) - Posts: 1044 - 07/02/2024 21:32:18 2525033 Link 1 |
I do not dislike mccarron. I pointed out that he is very skillful but slow. He now is playing like an 11 and distributing the ball fairly accurately - but usually backwards. So who replaces the 14 that is McManus if the successor is playing 11.

Leanord is a good player but hasn't played much IC football recently. He would need a good pre season and a run of games to really make an impact at Division 1 given the standard it is at. I cannot see that happening in the short term.

Sometimes you got to backwards to go forwards. I think you're looking at the game too literally .. forget about numbers and positions. That days gone.

There is no successor to McManus I'm afraid, mccarron (without capitals) is what he is, he offers something different, Kilkenny plays a similar role for Dublin

I'm happy with the way vinny is taking monaghan.. he's not afraid to test players, even losing heavily he has the eye to see who won't give up.. don't think he overachieved last year, I think monaghan has under achieved big time since 2015 Farney#1 (Monaghan) - Posts: 6 - 10/02/2024 02:01:47 2525286 Link 1 |
Thought the Kerry game was another really good game of football, even though it got away from us in the second half. We were unlucky enough to be down at half-time, and Kerry Kerryied in the second half. The Cliffords, O'Shea... they're the standard at the minute, even though Dublin caught them in the All-Ireland Final last year, and a young Monaghan team learnt a lot about what it takes to beat them. You need composure as well as effort, you need to be prepared for a brutal and effective press (Tyrone were squeezed horribly by it in the Quarter-final last year), you need to play for the entire match at the same intensity, you need to take a high proportion of your chances. It's hard, but they're not far-off and it's the second match of the league, with a number of experienced, quality players to come back. Any word on the u20 team this year? They got thumped by 10 points by Fermanagh on Sunday. veterngaa (Monaghan) - Posts: 390 - 13/02/2024 13:54:39 2525855 Link 0 |
Maybe look into the result more. That was the Hurling team.

Easy mistake when you are from up in Scotstown. They don't believe in hurling and probably can't believe or understand how we even have an U20 hurling team... We were the only Ulster county last year not to have an U20 hurling team so its good to see some work happening in this area to provide an opportunity to our young players. You're right there! But then again apply that to the other 25 or so clubs in Monaghan if you want to make that statement!
veterngaa (Monaghan) - Posts: 390 - 15/02/2024 10:48:15 2526161 Link 0 |
Those 25 other clubs don't have 5 parishes and 70+ players at every age group to choose from… Hence why it might be a struggle to field a hurling team for some.. How the other half live, eh?
