Replying To Meridian:  "Anyone see Paudie Clifford's back heeled goal at the weekend for Fossa. Great improv by him at the time but......... Watch it again. Was he not in the square before the ball?"
I think you're in the wrong forum thread but yeah it looks like a square ball not that it mattered to the result of the game at that point. He's there before the ball arrives.

I don't think it's a particularly notable goal or piece of skill even if it was legal, lads would be fluting around with that in training etc.

Square ball rule info for anyone interested is below. I didn't know that it could be given when a point was scored if the circumstances were appropriate for interference. Learned something new today!

Three league matches rather than nine?? Bit drastic.

What a player Ger Egan was for Westmeath. But surprised at his retirement - what age is he Mick 31/32 ?
In fairness to him over the last few years he seemed to be plagued with injury and probably never got time to fully recover - always playing through injury for club and county.
I guess it's bad news for the rest of the senior clubs as he should now get a chance to fully recuperate and chase that elusive senior medal in the summer. Thanks for the memories Ger.

Congratulations to Ger on a stellar career in the Westmeath jersey. One of the best players to wear the maroon. Just Kevin maguire, Bear Martin, Jimmy Dolan and John Heslin left off the u21 team that reached the Leinster final 12 years ago

34 id say he has had some terrible knee injuries and its a credit to him that he has continued at such a high level

He was minor in 2009, so he's 31.

Well done to Ger Egan on a great inter-county career. One of my favourite Westmeath players of the last 15-20 years. Remember him scoring an unbelievable point in the Leinster final v Dublin a few years ago.

Excellent contribution by Ger over a long spell, was our best player for a couple of years, understandable decision given his injury record recently, Tyrrellspass will certainly benefit. Prob the first retirement of quite a few key players over the next 12 months or so. Jimmy Dolan, Kevin Maguire, John Hes, Kieran Martin, Jason Daly will all be difficult to replace, Des will need a good first year as manager as replacements for that quality are not overly obvious.

A great servant to Westmeath. As I've said on here before, if he didn't suffer that bad injury a few years ago when he was one of the most consistent forwards in the country we would be looking at him play on for another couple of years. He was rarely below 8/10 in any game he played in a Westmeath jersey. He certainly owes the county nothing and Westmeath's loss will definitely Tyrrellspass gain

He'll have to have a good first year indeed or he'll have the likes of Edman on here calling for his head in no time.

I hope the management team use the OByrne cup to have a look at a few more players. There has been nice u20's coming through and some very good club game performances by some players worth a look.

So any word on new players in the current training squad ? I presume most of The Downs lads have been given a break ?

I'm just finished for the holidays and I just did a quick summary of the best of the current Westmeath panel v best of rest. These teams will be open to debate, I'm going off the last couple of years club/ county matches from what I have seen. Would this be a forgone conclusion or would the best of the rest come anywhere close. Just an interesting one as I read an article recently on some counties not having some of the top club players making themselves available too county panels. Best of the rest - 1. David Bryan 2. Mark mccallon 3. Jack Donoghue 4. Darragh Egerton 5. Joe Moran 6 conor slevin 7 Kelvin Reilly 8 Denis corroon 9 Justin Barrett 10 Wayne fox 11 ger leech 12 Andrew kilmartin 13 Finbar coyne 14 Niall Mitchell 15 Ger Egan Best of Westmeath Panel - 1. Jason Daly 2. Jamie Gonoud 3. Kevin McGuire 4. Jack smith 5. David lynch 6. Ronan Wallace 7. Jimmy Dolan 8. Sam Duncan 9. Ray Connellan 10. Sam McCarton 11 Ronon o toole 12 Luke Loughlin 13 senan baker 14 John heslin 15 Lorcan Dolan
