Good weekend largely for Westmeath clubs with Multy and The Downs progressing to penultimate stages in Leinster. Disappointing defeat for Shandonagh to a Kilkenny side, even more so considering Shandonagh would have had home advantage in both semi and final. Multy played well in patches but definitely need improvement if they're to repeat wins of 2018. Forwards were particularly poor with only Shane Williams impressing, he was outstanding and David Wallace improved things when introduced. Two McGivneys were good as was the keeper, Sweeney, who is worth looking at by Des Dolan. He made a couple of outstanding saves and his kickouts were very good. He's a fine young prospect. The Downs very comfortable winners in Cusack, easily could have won by 10-12, Conor Coughlan, Charlie Drumm, Luke Loughlin, Kevin O' Sullivan, Niall Mitchell and Andrew Kilmartin especially impressive. Louth championship must be average at best as the Ardee side were inferior all over the field. Ratoath next for The Downs, think in Croke Park. A bit off topic but is there a list anywhere of who won minor Div 1 and premier championship. PowellJohn (Westmeath) - Posts: 95 - 06/11/2022 16:02:50 2446637 Link 1 |
You are very much mistaken. Multy kept 5 clean sheets in their 8 games in the championship. St. Paul's, St. Joseph's and Bunbrosna were the only teams to get a goal against them.

2 out of 3 ain't bad! Multy just about got over the line but were alot better than the score line says. The Downs were full value for their win, could have won by a lot more missing a good few easy chances. Huge day for them in Croke park the next day out & they can beat ratoath. Can the downs actually win leinster, based on today's performance they will be hard beaten. Shandonagh got caught out by a very good Kilkenny team.....maybe they took it for granted. Great win for The Downs at the weekend. Never gonna get a better chance to get to a final now as they will play Ratoath from Meath who Garrycastle beat in 2019. Big day out too as the game will be played in Croke Park Temple56 (Westmeath) - Posts: 546 - 07/11/2022 09:12:20 2446694 Link 0 |

Don't see how multy we're much better than the shoreline suggests.. they scored 1 point in the first 30 minutes and Ballycommon squandered 4/5 goal chances.

Tend to agree, Multy's forwards bar Williams and Wallace were not threatening and young Sweeney's saves were the ultimate difference. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 2131 - 07/11/2022 10:38:54 2446713 Link 0 |
Match report in Offaly paper said Multy had 12 wides compared to only 3 from Ballycommon. The reporter suggested Ballycommon could have no complaints.

A win is a win. The year Multy won Leinster they scored the exact same amount in the Leinster final. Jack_Sparrow (Westmeath) - Posts: 1037 - 07/11/2022 12:08:58 2446731 Link 0 |
I wouldn't disagree that Multy deserved to win but to say that a 3 point loss flattered Ballycommon simply isn't true. Stats don't tell the full story, the wide count doesn't factor in the at least 5 shots Ballycommon dropped into Sweeneys hands or the goal chances they didn't take. A lot of Multys wides were long range frees that went well wide. Also huge credit to Craig Sweeney, made an unbelievable save with a couple of minutes left.

It may not grab the headlines like a division 1 final but the St. Pauls/Delvin vs Tyrellspass Division 4 U17 final turned out to be a very entertaining game of football. Pauls/Delvin fully deserved the win but credit to Tyrellspass for running them close in the end. Pauls/Delvin were that bit more economical in front of goal which proved the difference on the day. Three matches played in Leinster Colleges A championship and three Westmeath schools have suffered comprehensive defeats. The latest this afternoon with Marist beaten by Naas by 22 points. Should we be concerned considering our recent underage record has been poor? Where are we going wrong? Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 2131 - 08/11/2022 16:40:16 2446898 Link 0 |
Schools football is not an indicator for county underage football. WH schools have boxed well over the last 20 years with little in return on the county stage in that period. Captainfantastic (Westmeath) - Posts: 50 - 08/11/2022 21:39:21 2446920 Link 0 |
The St Josephs team that won Leinster in 2020 was packed with Westmeath minors and future U20s. We haven't much tradition of winning Leinster schools. Marist and Moate have reached finals in recent years. Athlone College in 2008 were the last team from the county to win the senior title before St Joseph's. Then it's all the way back to 1983 when CBS won it so wouldn't be overly concerned about those results. With five Westmeath schools in the A comp it can only be a good thing to have so many players exposed to top level. Schools football doesn't always reflect county underage but take Colaiste Choilm in Tullamore. They went from winning the 2020 B to getting to A semi final last year and gave Joseph's a good beating few weeks ago. It's no coincidence that this has coincided with Offaly's upturn in fortunes at underage. A_Chairde (Westmeath) - Posts: 294 - 09/11/2022 09:46:51 2446927 Link 0 |
I see Mullingar named as finalists for some years. Is that different from Mullingar Shamrocks, and St. Lomans, two other Mullingar based teams ?.

WH schools have boxed well in Leinster colleges in the last 20 years? We've won 2 championships and had the very odd finalist but considering there's five schools involved I wouldn't consider that we've competed well. It might not be an indicator of underage success but being beaten by 15-20 points in three successive games hardly bodes well for the future. Our record at minor level since 2000 is in the bottom two or three in the province. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 2131 - 09/11/2022 11:25:47 2446945 Link 0 |
