Replying To Groundskeeper5: "I asked someone in the know a few years ago why so many games were fixed in Aughrim for teams that it didnt make geographical sense, i was told its where teams want to play and when games are fixed elsewhere the fixtures guys get calls complaining. I get why players want to play in Aughrim but particularly with last years format with so many games i felt they could be moved around more.
On people leaving after games, i feel the gap can be too long. I get there issues with cars coming and going and teams need time to warm up. But i remember last year at a game and looking at my watch and it was an hour before the next game was due to start, I was home having at my kitchen table having a cupa and the other game had not started and i cant say i regretted it. Most senior teams are 30 mins+ away from Aughrim. In the past i feel the gap were shorter and made it easier to get in both." Good points. I think the long gap is probably to allow for any extra time to be played and - god forbid - penalties.
Some cracking u17 games played again last night. I made the game in Rathnew. Good crowd and good football. Fair play to the lads from the hills. Rathnew is no easy place to come out of with any kind of result - for various reasons - but last night, football was the overall winner.

Two games left in the group stage. Looks like Bray are out and Kiltegan look safe at the top. But it will be a dog fight amongst the remaining four to avoid the fifth place spot.

Predictions for this weekends SFC/IFC last round group games?
Friday - IFC Round 3
Ballinacor vs Barndarrig - I can see Barndarrig edging out this one by the minimum. A must win game for both sides.
Aughrim vs Avondale - It's hard to see anything other than another strong win for the dales in this one. Barndarrig might be hoping for Avondale to do them a favour in terms of score difference.
Top 2 prediction - Avondale and Ballinacor
Saturday - IFC Group 2
Donard vs Valleymount - With all 4 teams sitting on 2 points, it's going to be another close call here but I can see Donard edging out Valleymount unless they can come up with another goal fest against the Donard men. 4 point win Donard.
Laragh vs Annacurra - All to play for here again, Laragh have been in flying form all year with a slip up in their last game conceding 7 goals. I can see them winning this game with a bit to spare. Whoever finishes 3rd place here will more than likely be one of the best 3rd place teams. Laragh by 5.
Top 2 prediction - Laragh and Donard
IFC Group 1
Hollywood vs Coolkenno - Hollywood have started well in their opening 2 games with 2 wins from 2. I think they'll continue their winning ways but coolkenno will know they could do with some points from this one. Another Hollywood win for me, Hollywood by 6. I think Coolkenno will sneak that second best 3rd place team spot.
Ballymanus vs Newtown - It hasn't been going well for Newtown so far with no wins in their opening 2 games and I don't think it's going to change against the billies unfortunately for them. I think the billies will win this one easy enough. Ballymanus by 7.
Top 2 prediction - Hollywood and Ballymanus.
SFC Group 3
St Pats vs Kiltegan - Pats have come out of the blocks in flying form in their opening 2 games after a disappointing league campaign. Some key players back in the mix. Another pats win for me, pats by 2.
Dunlavin vs Eire Og - a disappointing start for the Greystones men after yet another good league campaign. I can see them getting over the line by the minimum here but I don't think it will be enough to get them out of 4th place. Eire Og by 1.
Top 2 prediction - Pats and Dunlavin
Sunday - SFC Group 1
Baltinglass vs Bray Emmets - Baltinglass to edge out this one by 3 or 4. Bray coming in off the back of a convincing win against Carnew will fear no one. I think Bray will end up being the first best 3rd place teams for this group.
An Tochar vs Carnew - An Tochar haven't showed what they're all about yet. I think they could win this one convincingly against a Carnew team without Brosnan. An Tochar by 10
Top 2 prediction - Baltinglass and An Tochar
SFC Group 2
The toughest group to call in my opinion coming into the final round.
AGB vs Rathnew - AGB to win this by the minimum. A must win game here for both sides. It's hard to know what AGB team will show up but I think they will just about get over this with their pace. It's never a good idea to write the men from the village off either…
Tinahely vs Blessington - Tinahely have struggled so far but got a crucial draw against Rathnew. I think Blesso will have too much for them here. Blesso by 3/4 and to top the group. Rathnew to be the second best 3rd place teams with 3 points on the board.
Top 2 Prediction - Blesso and AGB

So, Senior format is 2 best 3rd placed teams into Quarters in addition the top two in each group? The rest all into Keating Cup?

Baltinglass v Bray. Don't know what to make of Baltinglass this year. Seems to be the story with most teams. I think this will be a close game, closer than people think. Wouldn't surprise me if Bray snatch it.
An Tochar v Carnew. This should be a straight forward win for An Tochar.
St Pats v Kiltegan . I think Kiltegan might pull a shock here although form suggests St Pats. Kiltegan won't lie down too easy and it's do or die.
Dunlavin v Eire Og. Disappointing season alright for Eire Og. They haven't got going. I was disappointed with Dunlavin in their match v Pats. I'm going to side here with Eire Og.
Tinahely v Blessington. Another side who haven't got going but they did get that valuable point v Rathnew. They should have beaten Rathnew so I'm going with the men from the South. Blessington looked very poor on the 1st half v AGB.
AGB v Rathnew. I'm going with AGB here. Simply because they ran at Blessington and caused them loads of trouble. If they had taken their goal chances then things might have been different. Rathnew were susceptible once Tinahely ran at them.

No, my understanding is the third 3rd placed have no further involvement till next year. Bottom 3 play off for relegation. Thats how it was set out anyway.

Is it 3rd on points difference on head to head. The previous poster think Eire og. Are out on points difference but if they beat dunlavin they are above them on head to head. So one team have no games for months. Poor format.

Replying To Wonderingnow: "What would you suggest to be a better format vs the current one?" Last years format was better, in my opinion. This was again to be used this year. The 2 groups were even named. Our extended run in the Tailteann seemed to press a panic button somewhere and this new format was rushed in. I'd imagine it might revert to last years model in future. To me, this one is poorly thought out. The groups of 6 gave every team 5 games plus 1 in a QF. I think only the finalists will get 6 games in this format. Yes, the "unlucky" 3rd placed team will have no football from this weekend until next March when the county league kicks off - 7 months ? Whoever comes out tops in the relegation round robin will probably get the Keating Trophy. Where would you get the likes of it ? Only in Wicklow.

Group 1
Pats have safely qualified with 2 wins from 2 and the only team in the SFC guaranteed of a quarter final place after 2 rounds. Dog fight for the remaining automatic play off spot
Remaining games Pats v Kiltegan - as Kiltegan's need is greater, expect them to edge this one to ensure safe passage into ¼ final Dunlavin v Eire Og - Eire Og haven't got going yet; and have shipped 2 heavy defeats surprisingly; even a win is unlikely to secure. Dunlavin to target and deliver a win here and secure a quarter final place.
Prediction: 3 teams to finish level on 4 points and all to qualify for the quarter final; with H2H not applicable in that instance and scoring difference coming into play.
Quarter Finalists from this Group: 1. Pats; 2. Dunlavin; 3. Kiltegan Relegation Play-Off: Eire Og
Group 2
This group going down to the wire For Rathnew, AGB and Blessington - it's very simple : "win and in"; Tinahely need a win and then relying on other results as don't have any H2H advantage as it stands.
Rathnew v AGB - poor second half showing from AGB; 6 points up at HT to losing by 6; can they turn that around in a week? Expect Rathnew to come out firing and top the group Tinahely v Blesso - both teams know it's win or bust. Giving the nod to Tinahely
Prediction: Rathnew to top the group; Tinahely to overtake AGB & Blessington with a win. Quarter Finalists from this Group: 1. Rathnew; 2. Tinahely Relegation Play-Off: AGB & Blessington
Group 3
Finely poised after last weekend results. Bray have been impressive to date and Balto will need to draw on all their experience to best them; but after getting over An Tochar in dramatic fashion, it could really kickstart their campaign Carnew would have put a lot of emphasis on the Bray game to get to 3 points; but fell short. Unfortunately for them, will face a wounded An Tochar side now who need to win or facing the exit door.
Balto v Bray - a real banana skin for favourites Balto here; but expect their experience to get them over the line and top the group An Tochar v Carnew - An Tochar still waiting to catch fire in this years champ; but expect them to overcome a stiff challenge from Carnew
Prediction: Balto to top group; An Tochar to safely navigate their way through also. Quarter Finalists from this Group: 1. Balto ; 2. An Tochar; 3 Bray - to finish as the next best 3rd place team across all the groups on 2 points but with the best scoring difference across all the other teams on 2 points Relegation Play-Off: Carnew

And when you include the hurling it's even worse.
Kiltegan and Carnew footballers could potentially be done for the year after this weekend and their hurlers have only played 1 game. Bray footballers could be done as well and their hurlers haven't even played a game yet.
And the hurlers intercounty season ended 3 months ago. Really feel for all the club players.

I'm following games in Wicklow for about forty years; I've never known Rathnew to lose a championship game by 30 points. Regardless of whether a team is through to next round or not, this type of result is worrying for any club that suffers such a drubbing. Alot of very one-sided games over the weekend with no obvious winner emerging. Does anyone know when draws for next stages are being held?

Top 2 Prediction - Blesso and AGB" Was Brosnan red card rescinded? Heard it was." Wouldn't be the first time that Carnew got a red overturned if it was."]Fairly plain to see you come from one of those perfect clubs that win a championship once a century."]Just to reply to your rather silly intervention about me belonging to a club that wins once a century. What has that to do with anything - and I don't belong to any club. I'm around a long time and historically it was a bit of a joke if certain players from certain clubs got reds, these would be regularly rescinded if the "county required that players services". If you were old enough you would know this. Having said all that, I am just back from Aughrim where I saw some jaw dropping stuff from AGB. Was disappointed with them last week but they totally outclassed Rathnew today. If they can keep up this style and tempo of play they will be there or thereabouts for Miley. . The other game was won by the best footballers on the day. Carnew were full value for their win. They wanted the win and got it. I think they might have won without Ben. . Some great contributions and good strong runners. An Tochair seem to have totally lost their way. I have been banging on about their county players not performing with the exception of young Fogarty. Their other county reps just seem to prefer to be anonymous. Their whole team seems rudderless.

Very strange weekend of results. For so many years Pats, Rathnew, Blessington and Baltinglass were levels above the rest of the county and look at the results this weekend. I think it's great that the likes of Kiltegan, Arklow and Tinahely have improved but they're certainly not at the level that the "big 4" were for those years.
Blessington will now be in a relegation playoff for two years in a row and Pats playing division 2 football…
Standard of senior club football seems to at a worryingly low level at the moment. I look at Pats and Blessington and players like Crowe and O'Connor (to name a few) who would be in their prime now not playing. Both teams relying on well seasoned players like Anto McLoughlin and Dean Healy. Rathnew and Baltinglass haven't had many good players come through since the likes of Jackson, Mchugh and Theo Smyth. Worrying times…
