Toe to toe?

Carlow were well beaten Bimb, there's no denying that; as were Tipperary though last weekend by Limerick (by more in fact). In the event of beating Kildare next weekend, the likelihood is that this will come down to scoring difference. In that respect, they didn't throw in the towel, when they might have done in the second half. It was shored up somewhat and Marty was probably introduced for the last 10 minutes with scoring difference in mind - only to miss a relatively routine free by his own standards mind. For me, I'd take something out of the second half going into next weekend, particularly given the quantum and quality of our absentees and how things were going in the first (albeit Clare probably had more gears if needed - but still seemed intent to tack on those last few injury time points). That's what was meant by going toe to toe I suspect. Anyways, onwards and upwards. 'Today is another day' up in Longford' Passer_By (Carlow) - Posts: 547 - 01/03/2026 08:58:20 2659149 Link 0 |

Realistically we're probably going to need Down to do us a favour or possibly 2 at home to Kildare and Antrim. Skippy2 (Carlow) - Posts: 78 - 01/03/2026 11:08:23 2659160 Link 0 |

This might help you bimB.. Dictionary definition: "Toe-to-toe" is an adverb or adjective describing a direct, close-quarters confrontation, fight, or competition between two parties. It implies standing face-to-face, often in intense, one-on-one opposition, such as in boxing, debates, or business. Synonyms include head-to-headface-to-face, and direct." Well, that was a bit disappointing. Flat and didn't look like a Joe Murphy team. Some of the shooting was comically bad. Was it nerves? Hard to believe it was the same team which played so well in the first four games. CARPS (Carlow) - Posts: 1043 - 01/03/2026 16:43:08 2659243 Link 0 |

If Carlow beat Kildare then both teams are on 4 points. From the article below (from last year) head-to-head is used before scoring difference. And if both teams have the same result in their final match or Carlow win and Kildare lose, then that would mean Carlow would stay up. iacob (Carlow) - Posts: 69 - 01/03/2026 17:05:38 2659253 Link 0 |

Sounds like the hype got to them a small bit. Maybe coming off the back of three games in a row taking it's toil and Longford are a better side then predicted. Unbeaten in 4 now as well so no push overs. Beat London and we're up. Time to refocus and go again.

The issue is we will likely end up on 4 points with both Kildare and Antrim (assuming Wexford beat Kildare, Dublin beat us and Antrim beat Down) and then it will likely go down to scoring difference. I know there's a tie breaker rule for club championship if 3 teams finish on same points then a mini league of only the games played between those 3 teams kicks in but not sure if that applies to this competition. I was at the game. Longford are not great. We would have beaten them if we'd made proper use of the wind in the second half and turned our attacks into points. Carlow were very poor today.

You're forgetting Antrim will almost certainly finish the league on 4 points also, so it goes to scoring difference then.

Why will Antrim almost certainly finish on 4 points?

You're right! Okay, makes it more difficult then once scoring difference comes in.

Wasn't at game but listened to radio. We seemed to work very hard against the wind to keep it to one point down at halftime. We came out in 2nd half & kicked a two pointer & 1 point to go 2 up. After that it seemed like Longford were by far the better team. According to radio we made at least 3 last ditch tackles to prevent goals so could have been worse. I'm hoping this performance was down to the hype & expectations getting to the lads & we push on. Longford have been always a very hard team for Carlow to beat & the Tailteann cup game last year is very fresh in my mind. We were all talking about a home q/t final before that game & Longford brought us back to earth, just like today. carlo (Carlow) - Posts: 314 - 01/03/2026 18:53:49 2659299 Link 0 |

They'll surely be too good for Down in their last game.

A win v London Saturday week and we are definitely promoted 100% no way of being caught after today's results. Mess up against London and win in the last game v Leitrim will also definitely get us up. I don't think it'll come to that. Surely even Carlow can't mess this up!

Big win for the minor footballers in their league semi final down in Waterford today. 4-13 to 2-7. Onion Breath (Carlow) - Posts: 1787 - 01/03/2026 19:48:32 2659319 Link 0 |

Down v Antrim won't be a game for the faint hearted. No result in that game will surprise me.
