I understand, look to be clear I have huge respect for Ryan McHugh, the years of commitment he has already given Donegal is amazing for a still relatively young player. I don't propose dropping him from the Donegal team, I think he still has a significant role to play for the next few years, I just don't think we should be using him at wing back considering the way the game has changed. I am not opposed to using him in a roaming role, but which position on the field do you sacrifice a player to enable this? Personally I think wing-forward is probably most suitable, as he can cause mayhem when he gets in close to goal and can take points and draw fouls/frees. I just noticed time after time when he plays from deep that opposition are able to counter is so easily, as its predictable now. We should use him and Peadar Mogan etc in a rotation system, make us less predictable in some respects. Commodore (Donegal) - Posts: 1332 - 25/03/2022 13:47:29 2407032 Link 0 |

Yeah I was the same, Dublin didn't seem to have any one player marking him for the full game, not sure if that is because of their system or if they were just chopping and changing during the game.

I've heard that before about the 60s team. Donegal won three if the first Ulster under 21 championships in the 60s and then dropped off to the 80s and their all Ireland successes. Them 2 teams ultimately were key contributors of 1992. The first minor Ulster was 1956. Mick McGinley (Paul the golfers father) was on that team. I think football was slow to take hold because when the gaa coded their own version of football soccer was strong in Donegal and the teams wouldn't change over to Gaelic football. In 1972 were there still any Gaelic teams in inishowen? In that regard it's great to see players like Ryan Bradley winning an all Ireland or caolan mcgonagle and Conor O'Donnell pushing through. The soccer thing is true. Gweedore weren't founded until 1933 and before there was another club but locals also played with Dungloe. Even today there are 3 soccer clubs to one GAA club in the area. Inishowen still had GAA clubs but there were always more hurling than football in the early days. Burt were still going in the 70s. And another club named Naomh Mura in the same parish.

Is there a particular recommended book or a number of books on the history of GAA Clubs in Donegal?

I think there's a book by some priest but I found out about Naomh Mura from Donegal GAA website. They had a list of results from finals back in the 70s and 80s.

How can you post over 500 times about Donegal GAA and not know about Fr Seán Ó Gallchóir, he is the renowned GAA statistician in the county. His last book is over 300 pages. He is the man who stops lads spuffing at the high stool with "I played for Donegal", if you did it is in his book.

Very funny, but there are alot of people who blame him, But who else in the last 5 years could we have had there are no outstanding candidates that anyone could stand over. Apart from mcguinness who will never manage us again. I would love to be wrong.

Good win for Donegal, sometimes we have bottled those tight moments in games so it's nice to do the business and also in Letterkenny where a win was well overdue. Hopefully that's that ghost exorcised once and for all now on that particular ground. Donegal_abroad (Donegal) - Posts: 1403 - 27/03/2022 21:10:15 2407563 Link 1 |
I think you are from Armagh so stop talking sh1te on the Donegal thread, great win today but we should have got over the line easier, the penalty would have put the game to bed, we need to practice taking penalties for sure, sets it up nicely for 4 weeks time. should be a real Ulster battle in MacCumhaill Park. Well done to Declan and the boys securing div1 status for next season, now lets win Ulster. Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 3175 - 27/03/2022 21:14:04 2407565 Link 0 |
