Had a day off from my usual activities yesterday and decided to take a trip back to the old county. Thought it a good idea to take in what I believed would be the better of the county semi finals. I expected two clubs going all out to reach the country final but boy was I disappointed. I've seen more attacking play at a game of lawn bowls on an English Saturday morning. The amount of times the ball was passed back from good attacking positions to the teams defence was disheartening to say the least. I'm delighted for Cian McKeown that his was the vital score as he was the only attack minded player on the field. Thank God we didn't have to endure extra time. I only stayed on because someone told me it might go to penalties and we might see some excitement. The highlight of my visit was the new electronic scoreboard. It might have taken twenty years but it's great that we have cought up with the rest of the country. As for the football I won't be back soon. Will only be as handy in the final if Boyle was to set up as poor defensively as Roscommon Gaels did on Saturday. Goals all came too easy meanwhile Pearses a good goal scoring team struggled to create any goal chances yesterday. For all the talk about Boyle forwards they have basically returned to the final because they have greatly improved in defence since round 1 of the championship. Pearses no forwards? Carey,Colleran, Tumulty suggests otherwise. Purcell, Dineen, McManus, Oates etc offer the physically though are probably starting too many teenagers at the moment. Don't think I'll ever warm to the idea of a penalty shootout to decide a championship match and just hope my club or county doesn't lose in that manner, one point fine margin losses as Roscommon suffered the last few years is bad enough. As lovely new electronic scoreboard is a lot myself included are sad to see the old school one gone which offered a certain character to the ground, a pity it wasn't kept and the new one place in the graveyard end. Have lost count to the amount of semi finals that have played out in that manner over the years and then the team that wins such war of attrition normally getting written off for the final. Just watched Pat Spillane on Late Late Show. Not a man I agree with very often but his comments at the end sums up gaelic football. When are coaches going to give us back our game and leave basketball where it belongs. Rossieforever (Roscommon) - Posts: 94 - 13/10/2023 23:09:23 2508284 Link 1 |

When u play 12 or 13 aside players are to fit and intelligent for 15 to 20 players games been anything but a cynical slow approach game it's become. OhtobeARossie (Roscommon) - Posts: 1784 - 15/10/2023 15:16:58 2508459 Link 0 |
I doubt many if any clued in Meath and Roscommon supporters have the expectations of winning the All Ireland, Quarter final would be considered a good championship for both making those jobs less pressured than teams that actually expected to win or at least challenge for the All Ireland. Mayo a bit different having reached so many All Ireland finals and people will talk them up as contenders for a while yet but the current Mayo team are lack the quality and leadership they had in those teams that reached final and right now should be a bit more realistic. So the senior show piece on Sunday in Hyde Park. When picking a winner in these finals I nearly always looked how the two teams are performing defensively first and foremost as good defences it what wins a county title 99% of the time. Have you ever seen a more disingenuous apology to that one that was issued to Ollie lennon and his management team by the Roscommon LGFA. Tarismelting22 (Roscommon) - Posts: 786 - 18/10/2023 10:38:10 2508986 Link 1 |
It's a disgrace and doesn't even address the main issue, the fact they bare faced lied about contacting members of the panel. Beggars belief.

Handled badly but the Women deserve a better manager than someone who never played football. sourmilk93 (Roscommon) - Posts: 1201 - 18/10/2023 13:22:56 2509032 Link 0 |
The latest news now cast further questions of the Board. The Clubs have voted to return Ollie and Management team for the coming season. One question that needs to be answered is - Who is the co.board trying to protect here? How can this person be trusted going forward? This whole saga will not stop until there is a resignation or sacking. Someone needs to be help responsible for what has been one of the most embarrassing situations to ever have developed at Co. board level. rosco7 (Roscommon) - Posts: 48 - 18/10/2023 14:24:56 2509045 Link 0 |

Conor Cox gets a red card over turned for the second year in a row & is again cleared to play in the county final. Fair play to him & great that he gets to play in the final but this is either an insult to the referees or the disciplinary system in Roscommon..or both! Some of the best coaches in world football didn't play football at a high level that's hardly an argument

Were you at the match? Were you at the Apoeal hearing? Did you see the evidence produced at the appeal? The Ref has to make a decision on the spot. Committees have the luxury of scrolling through video etc. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2127 - 19/10/2023 11:04:55 2509192 Link 1 |
No I wasn't at the game or the "Apoel" hearing nor did I see the video evidence. Maybe it is a coincidence but its strange that the same player got cleared of two straight red cards received in semi finals two years in a row to be available in the final. Yes referee's have to make decisions on the spot & it is a tough job, that is not in question. So did two different referees get the decisions wrong 2 years in a row?

I was at the game Red should never have been overturned walked out with a couple of Eire Og Man and they were certain they wouldnt have him for the final.

Was a tussle between Cox and the Elphin player. Two yellow was expected outcome but the ref on the advice of the lineman whom claimed a boot/fist was thrown showed Cox a red. The video evidence would have shown that not to be the case and the red now downgraded to a yellow. It was the first red card he's received playing for Eire Og. In last years semi final he got a black on full time and would have missed the first period of extra time had Croans kicked that free instead of going for goal and getting nothing. First time I've seen anyone from Roscommon call themselves "Rassie" that word is what people Mayo say as they struggle to say rossie.
