Replying To Medals:  "What does it mean for the future of galway hurling and the smaller clubs in Galway that the bigger clubs whose seconds teams are now in the Intermediate hurling championship are picking up wins. Clarinbridge beating Annaghdown today and Turloughmore second team beat Ballindereen who were many peoples favourites for the championship having come down from Senior. You also have Craughwell and Castlegar. A quarter of Intermediate clubs are clubs second teams. Correct me if I'm wrong but all four junior A semi finalist last year were clubs second teams too."
Fair points. It's hard to say what to do about it though. If my Parish is full of lads that want to participate and yours isn't or Vice versa what can be done? I feel your pain though. If you compare Loughrea with maybe Kilbeacanty you could probably make 3 Loughrea teams that would be beat Kilbeacanty due to having a far bigger population to pick from.

Replying To minor77:  "Yes you are correct re the 4 junior a semi finalists also you look at claranbridge and turloughmore both have been very successful at minor and under 21/20 so have plenty of players who can't make there senior teams where as some of the intermediate teams can barely field underage teams and at at much lower grades"
some super hurling games at the weekend. Big wins for Cappy Loughrea & Thomas's - all 3 wont be too far away at all. Big win also for Ardrahan. surprising wins for Portumna & Mullagh. I expected those to be struggling this year. Still think both of these far east galway clubs will be intermediate in the next 3 years though.

The St Thomas and Sarsfields game was different level as regards club hurling. Would be happy if we get a county final half as good. Sarsfields will rue the missed penalties but they found a gem in young Darren Murphy at corner forward. Absolutely terrorised St Thomas in the first half.

We obviously have one exceptional team in St Thomas' but the chasing pack is strong with Clarinbridge, Turloughmore and Sarsfields. I'd be surprised if those four didn't decide the winner. Clarinbridge only played well for about 15 mins but they looked sharp when it clicked and they have quality all over the field.

Turloughmore gave Castlegar a good beating and we know the talent they have. Sean Loftus scoring 0-09 was eyecatching.

Complete thrashing between TAD and Kilnadeema-Letrim yesterday evening, Colm Molloy absolutely fantastic for KL, 1-7 I think it was from play. TAD absolutely atrocious from start to finish, from a team made up of a large number players that have represented Galway at underage and senior level, and were Senior A only 2 years ago might I add. Hard to see them having a future as a senior club at the moment. KL surely one of the favourites to make it back to Senior A?

Realistically the intermediate championship is operating at a Junior A level so I wouldn't be too worried about second teams being in at that division as that is standard enough in a lot of counties. Club teams operating at a high Level come and go in cycles. No one dominates for generations in galway as you can see from the fact that Castlegar and Ardrahan are the one clubs hitting double figures in the roll of honor. (Castlegar until the early 80s probably the closest to that generational dominance) This is good for a county, but what I do disagree with is the number of senior teams in galway and hope they do cut it down to 16 as per the rest of the country, too many clubs afraid of the word intermediate or even Junior even though they'd be way more competitive and be able to build up to be competitive at the highest level they can, rather than just do enough to survive and scrape another year senior.

Attended the Thomas's match. James Regan, David Burke rolled back the years. Eanna class. Conor Cooney Class. They just kept coming back when Sarsfield nosed in front. I think the going might get a little tough for them around a semi-final spot, they are pulling from a realistic panel of 17 / 18 lads. Expect a new name of the county cup this year, Turlough, Cappy or the bridge.

Very exciting future in Galway hurling
There is a huge amount of talented lads u21/23 in the county
When you look at all the galway lads who played third level hurling too
I thought alex connaire showed up well for sarsfields
Im sure henry and his management team are keeping a close eye on them all

Intermediate is tougher than people think. Eyrecourt, Carnmore, Kinvara and Abbeyknockmoy all failing in recent years to get back up to Senior after being relegated.

Other than these Rahoon and Killimor haven't been in Senior since mid eighties. Though Killimor should have made it up last year.

Other than the four former Senior clubs mentioned above who havent got back up and Rahoon and Killimor and Sylane possibly ,the remaining Intermediate teams other than three Senior clubs second teams who won last weekend, will probably be battling to avoid a relegation scrap. Annaghdown, Castlegar, Kiltormer, Kilbeacanty, Spiddal

Craughwell Intermediate beating Carnmore another big surprise last night.

Future shape should be 8 lowest teams in Senior plus 8 highest teams in Intermediate to form a Senior B competition. I know we are on the way to having 16 teams in Senior A but the proposal for the remaining 8 Senior B teams to play a competition among themselves with no link to Senior A won't hold too much interest for too long. Playing in America during the summer will be too attractive.

Other possibility is these 16 teams competing in a new competition called Premier Intermediate with winner representing Galway in Connacht and All Ireland Club competitions.

St. Thomas' are still the team to beat, but I reckon Turlough, 'Bridge, Cappy or maybe the 'Town aka Loughrea could make it interesting!! Outside of those that's it in my opinion"
I'm surprised Gort ran Cappy so close so maybe Gort are better than I expected. Great win for Ardrahan. Another surprise. It would be nice if some HIDDEN GEMS were found on some of these teams that could play for the county.

Unfortunately Kinvara may well be in that relegation scrap. As I understand Conor Whelan is away travelling for a few weeks and they have a few injuries/suspensions for the next game. They were poor at the weekend and a lot of young lads who had been a big hope didn't turn up. They have a good player in Josh Connors who was a county minor last year

It has always been leveled at Kinvara that they are junior without him...time will tell. And it opens up the question of is it a good championship or is just because the quality is poor!

An interesting survey to do would be how many clubs have players missing for the first and second rounds of the championship who have decided to travel for the summer. This then calls into question the logic of a split season and finishing the Inter County season weeks earlier than our usual September slot.

Cappy seem to struggle against the likes of Gort who are in complete transition, Gort have alot of lads retired and nothing coming through at underage. They are sinking rapidly and certs for Intermediate in the next few years.

Luckily for alot of Clubs there is no relegation this year from Senior or Intermediate.
Next year will have 16 Senior Club Championship, 8 Senior B, And 16 Intermediate Club Championship.
No Promotion or Relegation from Intermediate this year and No Promotion from Junior A this year.

Still fancy Cappataggle, Loughrea, Tommy Larkins and Craughwell top 4 from this group with Gort and Kilconerion in no man's land aka nothing to play for.

Beagh, Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry and Padraig Pearses look to be the worst teams in Senior

Intermediate is essentially Junior this year in all but name. If you cant win Senior A from Senior B then why even call it Senior?

I think Kinvara have enough to stay up in those young lads but yes it is fairly bleak after him when you watch them. Although as I said they have Josh O connor and Dara Helebert who have both been involved in county minor setups over the past 2/3 years so they are still in a better place than some other teams in the championship

Yeah you're probably right. But there's always some surprise team that pops out of nowhere like Mellows did some years back.

Katherine there is Relegation from Senior B to Intermediate and relegation from Intermediate to Junior A. There is also promotion from Intermediate to Senior B and from Junior A to Intermediate..

I think Cappy will get out of the group but I think they've missed the boat on winning a county title. Will still be a decent senior team for the foreseeable future but think they're fallen out of that bunch of 2/3 teams outside of Thomas's. The other senior A group looks considerably stronger. I'd imagine Kilconiern will be going down to Ssenior B next year, no disrespect to them but a huge reason they're senior A is the group they had last year. Fair play to them, they took advantage and topped it but feel they'll be going down again. Wonder will there be any bolters from Senior B to go deep in championship?
