Also I think it is fairly widely accepted from a neutral view that Keegan has gotten the better of Connolly in their battles over the years. Con did a job on Lee in 2019 but Lee destroyed him this year. Con should have gotten a black card."
He got a super goal, which was my initial point really, if he had been enabled to play to his expansive best instead of standing on lads toes, I think it would have been better for Mayo, despite it Dublin overloaded with Kilkenny and Connolly, Mayo couldnt cope and Dermo was the pivotal game changer that won 17 for Dublin. In 16 Keegan lost him and had to pull him down, got a black card, Dermo goes on to win and score a penalty, I just don't know how that winning the battle. Admittedly in 15 Dermo got a red for kicking out, but provoked as we all know by a blatant pull down.

I've no complaints on this year at all Lee had great game, I thought he was Kilkenny, I was at the game mind and haven't watched it back so going from memory.

A neutral view, really? I think anyone looking at HS posts would struggle to keep a straight face while claiming there is a "neutral" view when the Dubs are involved!

So Keegan (Defender) struggled against Connolly (Forward) whom he outscored on multiple occasions. Hmmmmm

A half forward and a half back, the description of a defender and forward are misleading. You cant weigh the contribution on individual score alone or one set of criteria, if you did the debate is finished, because another variable is how many ALL Ireland medals did Keegan win marking Connolly, exactly.

Dermo, was more then a scorer, he was strong, could field, beat his man, he could play make, split a defense, he could break lines, tough as teak and take anyone on in contact and break a line and he could score he was complete - indictive to the above is the black Keegan got in 16, Dermo showed him his heels and he got the line for pulling him down. Dermo went on to win a penalty doing his thing and scored, the following year, with Keegan on Kilkenny, Dermo made hay and was the creative spark and the critical change that won the ALL Ireland for Dublin. Id openly acknowledge Dermo was petulant in 2015, but the way Keegan/teams tried to stop him was to just drag him down and provoke him, because they were terrified of him, Keegan included and as 16 and 17 proved, Connolly got the better of him.

Scoring is one narrow field, like saying not winning an All Ireland and Connolly having six makes Keegan any less of great player, the game is more than a score count particularly in those positions, its a narrow interpretation of the game. Like Keegan on Kilkenny, in 17, it wasn't Kilkennys scoring Mayo were afraid about it was his play making and contribution to the offensive strategy, same with Dermo really.

Its like this, on a team of legends only one man would be called from the trenches, to play a vitol role ina five in a row, other legends - like Bernard Brogan, were struggling to make the bench, Connolly get the call, that the greatest team of all time need him and he sails straight into the panel, he was that good and proved it - the finals against Keegan are indictive of it, his key contributions 16/17 against Keegan in those games at the height of the Dublin vs Mayo rivalry enabled Dublin to no 2/3 of a five in a row.

I think it is fair to say that Lee Keegan go the better of Connolly over the years, although I don't think it was all one way traffic as it has sometimes been painted. That's what made it so compelling.

Plenty half-backs outscore half-forwards these days, both in opposition and from the same team. It's often easier to play as a wing-back and play with more space in front of you, if you're an attacking player.
As for the argument here, nobody destroyed anyone as some posters have mentioned. They're 2 of the best players to play the game in the last 20 years and gave each other plenty problems. It was a fascinating match-up most days and both got the better of the battle at different stages.

You're bang on the money MesAmis. You had two of the great players of recent times going at it with all they had. It was compelling.

Connolly didn't leave Keegan for dead in 2016, it was Hennelly shanking a kickout to him right in front of goal which led up to Keegan's black card. Don't think we can put the blame on Leeroy for that one.

It was also Paddy Andrews who Hennelly fouled after making a mess of a high ball. Dermo tucked the penno away nicely, it would have to be said (though Keegan had probably scored the goal of the season in the first half of that game).

Agreed about the prevalence of simplistic analysis though.

Lee Keegan is a great player and there's no doubt about that but the year belongs to Tyrone. Myler and Mc Geary were just a different level than any other footballer this year. I don't know how anyone is going to separate them to give one POTY.

For me Mcgeary shades it ahead ahead of Meyler.
