How Was It For You?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I see there's a thread on Mayo and whether we'll win, ever win, never win and every other way of kicking the same around, but the year is over we got to the final and lost. Not bad in retrospect considering all factors during the season as a whole and taking the final out of it. Tyrone were better and I wish them the very best because that's what they've been in 2021.

But how do you feel about your own county now that the curtain has dropped? Do you feel 2021 will turn out to be a step in the right or the wrong direction? I'll give short views on 5 others (not on my own Mayo):

Dublin - the bubble burst and doubts about the manager. Stepping down is never the right direction but it's the natural order and making it temporary is the key outcome. Still favs for 2022.
Kerry - has to be frustrating, looking the part all year and then what? I think in the end this year will still stand to Kerry's quest to find the right blend and balance. Kerry supporters always want it now, but that's what they've been used to.
Donegal - another year of frustration and now Tyrone will get that confidence boost winning brings, so Donegal look like the tide might already be going out for this generation. Murphy's greatest days are probably behind him too, so 2022 will need to be better.
Galway - is PJ still the man to get the most out of the players or has his best before date already expired? Is it just an S&C issue? If Mayo didn't rally would Galway have beaten the Dubs? Galway seem to have more questions to ask than answers to them, but that's the start of something not the finish.
Meath - definitely right direction for Meath. Will be boosted by the mood in the county with the girls showing the way and the county winning the lads minor title too. Seniors also got a boost in Leinster and will feel that better times are on the horizon. Hopes of ending Dublin's monopoly of Leinster titles must be a notch or two higher. Will we ever has been replaced by when will we...

Monaghan should be on that list too.

I'm really looking forward to 2022 already, I think/hope we will give a far better account our ourselves, Ulster will be as tough as ever,
Tyrone Armagh Derry Monaghan Donegal all have a right good shout at winning it and everyone will be gunning for Tyrone.
I expect Mayo to win Connacht again, Kerry and Dublin also to win their provinces easily, think the Dubs and Kerry will be wiser and improved next year,
If I was to narrow it down to the 3 favs for next year I'd say Kerry Tyrone and Dublin, problem for Tyrone is they have to navigate the Ulster minefield.
League to come to in the Spring and hopefully covid will be behind us so the future looks bright enough PG.

For me, and think most Dubs will agree, this year felt like we were just waiting to beaten. The same spark and endeavor was just gone, encapsulated by the over reliance on keep ball tactics.

Something was just off all year. In end I was happy that it was Mayo that delivered the final blow.

Looking forward to the next few years as we try to build a new team that can compete with the best. I think it'll take a few seasons to be honest but there's still a basis for a very good team there if and when the internal issues get sorted out which could take awhile.

Overall I enjoyed the year, it was just great to get back in the gates of Croker again and I thoroughly enjoyed the Championships.

What structure is the championship next year?
Back to qualifiers /super 8s or straight knockout again?
Tbh I've way preferred the straight ko format we've had these past two years.

Think there's a special congress coming up to decide the structures for the future? straight knockout is good but it's a bit too severe,
think we need a 3 tiered Championship, too many teams getting walloped by teams they can never compete with.

Some problems with Dublin football internally need sorting. I think maybe County board personnel been around too long. Now that Dublin have lost maybe some honest reflection is needed, but I doubt it with what we have in place, a rough few years ahead. The hurlers definitely in the doldrums but I really enjoyed getting into Croke Park to see them, unfortunate with Covid, made life very difficult for them.
But it is great to see crowds back, great to be back, thats the best I can say about this year.

There's not much between a host of teams right now. Tyrone got the benefit of 2 pieces of luck this year with arguably the 2 best players in the country having to leave the field against them. If Murphy hadn't mistimed that swipe of his foot there's a good chance Tyrone were losing that day. Championship needs to stay straight knockout.

From a Meath perspective definitely looking forward to 2022. Apart from one game this year we performed well, the addition of players like hickey have given the team a real boost. We probably have found our number 1 gk after dubs game when second half performance is hopefully what we can expect next year in every game. The minors winning and the ladies have given a huge boost to the gaa in county and now it's over to our senior team to go out and prove they have what it takes. Also the addition of a couple of players from u20s who were only beat by all ire champions will benefit the team.
Roll on January.

Straight ko still has huge disadvantages to certain counties. Is it fair to the Leinster teams to come up against dubs and be out after all the training? Same for munster, The qualifiers I think work best. The super 8s I'm not so sure of, think a quarter final open draw would work better with the provincial winners having home advantage

That's my list Greengrass and really I was looking for people to comment on their own counties. I didn't because there's enough being said about Mayo and also Tyrone which is why I picked 5 different counties. By all means throw in where you think Monaghan find themselves after 2021 if you've a strong interest in the neighbours.

How do you think Mickey Harte's been doing for Louth? Are there signs of improvement do you think?

There is a congress in the next 3 or 4 weeks to have a vote about the future structure. To best of my knowledge they are looking at 2 options
1) realigning the provinces into 8 teams each
2) some form of league format to the AI with provincials to be played off in the Spring

I did read somewhere that option 2 above is un-likely to win support mainly due to reluctance from Ulster counties to support - but I could be wrong. Anyone here from Ulster might be able to give an opinion?

If they don't change anything then we go back to the pre Covid format and I believe the Super 8's is up for review which I don't think has worked at all.

I really don't know what is the best format. But whatever is done it has to assist weaker counties. Where counties are having little or no success it likely that GAA will lose ground to soccer and other sports - maybe that has already happened in Leinster counties such as Meath, Kildare and Laois

Apologies let me correct this message before anyone from Meath Kildare or Laois jump down my neck!

What I meant to say was the current structure where Leinster teams were coming up against Dublin with little success over past 15-20 years may be having an impact in these counties.... apologies in advance - it wasn't a dig at anyone

I don't know and I suppose those decisions will depend on covid, crowds and all that. However, I'd be thinking that it'll revert to qualifiers and super 8s for financial reasons, plus the discussions on a tiered championship will probably be in the mix again.

Of all people I think PJ would have benefited most from the couple of years of missed super 8s... he had too little opportunity to learn and apply any lessons and build up his own experience along with that of his backroom team. Imagine what he'd have gleaned from two proper campaigns and games against the top Ulster sides, the Dubs, Kerry and even Meath this year? His timing has been unfortunate to say the least.

Mickey Harte has been positive for Louth. There is an air of optimism. We ran Offaly close in the championship and will be in division three next year. Players now want to play for the county.

As a Limerick football supporter I would be happy enough, I thought we did well in the league first year up division 3 getting to a semi-final. We beat Waterford well in the 1st round of Munster but Cork burst our bubble in the Gealic Rounds and I thought after Tipperary beating them in the Munster final last year after we throw away a 7 point lead against Tipperary I thought we would give them a better game. Billy Lee has done unbelievably well since he took over but Limerick lack a few decent forwards to go up another level and a big problem for us next year is our best forward Danny Neville has emigrated to Dubai and he is a major loss to us. Our U20's were beaten by 3 points against Tipperary but put a decent performance. Our minor footballers got to a Munster final vs Cork 1st 1 since 1998 beating Tipperary and Clare along the way and gave a great account of themselves and it was only in last 5 minutes Cork pulled away from them.

I wouldn't be happy with how our year ended. I tho o o said here at the start, promotion back to division 1 and a Connacht tile would have been a very decent year and I'd have taken that but when you get to a final you need to be winning it especially the fact it was our second final in a row and in a favourites. Very disappointing but we go again…that's all we can do.

Think Wexford football took a good step in the right direction after years in the doldrums. We won a championship match against Wicklow, our first championship win in a good few years. Ran Dublin to 8 points then in Wexford Park. Our u20s only lost to Offaly the eventual AI winners at that Grade by a point. Be good to get back out of div 4 next year. Which would be easier said than done given the quality of teams in it next year. And another championship win or 2 would be progress also.
