Kieran totally alienated the clubs and grassroots in Kildare which was ultimately his downfall. Of course there were positives to McGeeneys reign but there were also negatives including the Seanie Johnson thing. In reality with the players he had available to him he probably should have delivered a Leinster. daytona11 (Kildare) - Posts: 4012 - 20/07/2021 14:05:12 2362142 Link 0 |
McGeeney's time with Kildare ultimately flattered to deceive. We were competitive and the players enjoyed playing for him but in the cold light of day its a results game and in that aspect we were not successful. We consistently had to go the back door route (never won Leinster) and in those qualifiers whilst we often had good runs (which have given his time the perception of being successful), those wins were against poor to average teams but when the crunch games arrived, we were never able to beat a top team, and we never broke into the top tier. He has been 6 years with Armagh now, the same length of his time with Kildare and arguably he has been even less successful. jimski (Kildare) - Posts: 381 - 20/07/2021 19:25:26 2362242 Link 0 |
The players he had available were never better than the players available to Dublin during his tenure at Kildare. The very fact he was a kick of the ball away from beating a superior team should be recognised. Since he's left, several managers have tried and failed miserably in Leinster. The shelf life thing isn't always the case either, Sean Boylan worked wonders at Meath for years, I think so long as a manger adapts and tries new things they can do a long term job. Armagh are now a division one side under Geezer. He should at least be allowed a shot at staying there. I'll reserve my judgement on him for another year anyway.

But enough about Davy Fitz. What about McGeeney ? carlovia (None) - Posts: 1517 - 20/07/2021 21:41:01 2362294 Link 2 |
I'd argue that over the 6 years McGeeney was with Kildare, he very much did have a team that was capable of beating the dubs. Earley, Doyle, Kavanagh, Bolton, Callaghan.. we had top, top players in every line of the pitch

Jimski, Kildare have only won the Leinster title twice since 1956. Both of those were won under Micko. Since 1956 Kildare have played in three All Ireland semi finals. One of those was under Kieran McGeeney. They were very close that day to reaching only their second All Ireland final since 1935. Also Armagh are in a better place now than they were when Kieran McGeeney took over.
