Well football is still the national sport in most counties and I reckon Kildare are looking to be strong in both codes.

Good on Kildare, trying to promote both codes. I trained with a club in Kildare a few years ago when I was doing an internship during college, the training was good and lets hope the upward trajectory continues.

Jaysus, I do!

1977. Aughrim Kildare 3 - 9 Dublin 0 - 9. Quarter final of Leinster senior.

Dublin were going well enough at that time. Had a good league, Then that!

Was handy Kildare team with Pat Dunny and Tommy Carew, both dual Leinster railway cup players as far as I recall?

Every county should be doing it. You'll often get dinosaurs who don't want the other code getting stronger but screw them. I say it's against the ethos of the GAA - promotion of our national games. Kids should have the choice to play both. Fair play to the likes of Dungloe for getting the game into west Donegal.

Replying To daytona11:  "Castledermot did make a brief comeback at junior level for a while about 3-4 years ago as did Athy so there is interest there. Internally for Kildare hurling it would be great for as many clubs to be playing as possible.

I'd think at the moent the likes of Maynooth, Naas and to a lesser extent clubs like Eire Og and Clane is where we will see the majority of the progress being made. Even in Leixlip and Celbridge at the moment there has been a little decline. Work is being done at underage level so hopefully that will pay off for them soon."
I was down in St Laurances few weeks ago and couldn't believe the amount of kids with hurls.. for a south Kildare club it was surprising to see a large car park full, kids everywhere and not a football in sight..

Even more impressive: in the 1976 Leinster championship, they beat Dublin by 3-10 to 1-10 and then lost to Wexford by only 2-19 to 2-15 in the semi-final. Wexford went on to win Leinster in 1976 and 1977. Just found this old interview with the great Pat Dunny:

Fair play to Seanie Johnston for raising the profile of hurling in Kildare.

Spot on Rolo. The GAA, County boards and clubs should promote both equally.

Brilliant lol. Seriously though its great to see a county like Kildare go well in hurling..Im delighted to see results like that from time to time. Would nt it be great also if Kilkenny footballers were able to start up again and be more competitive also.

I remember as a small boy watching Galway play Kildare in what was a national hurling league match I think. It would have been in the early 1970's and probably a Division 1B hurling match or maybe some kind of preliminary championship match. All I remember of it is that it was nip and tuck and the result was in the balance up to the very end but Galway just edged it. I remember being very excited that Galway won it. The graph of the 2 counties in hurling has changed a lot since then.

Every Hurling person in Ireland and beyond ought to be pulling for the future of Kildare Hurling. It's a wonderful story (so far) and I really hope it gets better. Kildare Abu (except against Galway of course).

We will certainly see. I think underage hurling needs to be structured a little differently in comparison to football @ club level. Let the under 12's up to minors @ club level play in leagues in the stronger counties.

So for example no reason why Maynooth, Naas, Celbridge, Leixlip, Coill Dubh, Clane etc can't be playing 15 or so matches a year in Dublin or Kilkenny even.

The same goes for Meath clubs and Laois clubs also. I know it happens to a certain extent but central GAA should put structures in place to make sure it is the norm.
