And nobody marking them….

Another wasted weekend of "championship" football. Teams like Limk and Tipp should be punching at their own weight, which is intermediate grade. Cavan should be in the junior grade. These counties, even though they try hard, have no where near the resources of the likes of Kerry or Dublin. And never have had them...not in the last 10, 20, 30 or 100 years. foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 1911 - 10/07/2021 20:52:12 2358406 Link 5 |

I see Cavan has regained its rightful position in the hierarchical order of Gaelic football. Meath to follow very soon.

What do you mean by 'resources'? Financial? If this is the case then you are correct but no other county can compete. Is your solution to just have two teams? If it is clubs and player numbers then what is the baseline number of clubs/players a county would need to be competitive at senior level? Cork have the most resources in this regard but we are off to 'High Intermediate ' it seems.. Leinster/ Munster are provinces and not counties. bennybunny (Cork) - Posts: 3917 - 10/07/2021 21:43:04 2358418 Link 1 |

10 senior teams picked from the following 14 counties: Dublin Kerry Tyrone Donegal Armagh Tyrone Mayo Galway Monaghan Meath Kildare Roscommon Clare Cork Cork, Clare, Roscommon and their like could be senior in any given season, but right now would come in at 'high intermediate' level. 10 senior teams 11 intermediate 11 junior Unfortunately, no room for my own NY under my new championship structure. What right has a county to classify itself as 'senior', when the fare that it serves up in well below senior level; very low junior in some cases? Tradition? Or it was always that way? That wasn't senior football served up by either Cork or Limk today. Time to have games where teams are playing teams of reasonably similar levels, and not these pigeon shoots that we have weekend in, weekend out. foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 1911 - 10/07/2021 22:39:40 2358436 Link 0 |

They did keep it within a single digit margin, the handicap must have been much higher than 8 points. That's two championship games in a row now where Kerry have underperformed. Will the media calm down with the hype as a result of that? Of course not.

You didn't answer my question on resources. Limerick v Cork wasn't great. Perhaps that was down to style, coaching? Something that could be rectified with a new coach and doesn't necessarily require relegation to ' High Intermediate '..Cork won a minor and under 20 two years ago and are 'generally' moving in the right direction. The road is bumpy and we may be hammered in out next game. I don't see benefit in relegating us. You didn't include Derry. All Ireland minor finalists next week, Ulster under 20 champs recently..another side generally moving upwards.. bennybunny (Cork) - Posts: 3917 - 11/07/2021 09:46:23 2358476 Link 1 |
I think it would be reasonable to suggest that the provincial champions of 2020 should have been able to put up a better fight than they did yesterday??

If Cork are heading for "higher intermediate grade" there might be more problems that you realise ;). Being serious I'm sure a "higher intermediate standard" would make into the senior grade; if only to make up the numbers ;). Your point isn't a million miles off to be fair; there needs to be honest debate within the GAA where we're going and what is the point. Yes Cavan and Tipp got over the line last December; but it was a winter championship and a season like no other; strange results were likely to happen. We're what a month into this season's football championship and from what I've seen; the best game to date was Offaly v Louth in Navan. Two teams you could argue aren't a million miles from each other, one promoted to Div 3 for next season and one that spent this season in Div 3. The games involving Division 1 teams have been awful and that is likely to continue with a big win for Donegal today, although Derry are probably around Cork's standard and a county you'd hope to push on. A Senior, Intermediate, and Junior inter county championship summer is the way to go, I get counties say they'll be left behind, lose the opportunity to play the big teams, but I say put the work in, win your Junior championship, push yourself further and compete and hopefully win or have a good summer in your intermediate championship. It won't solve the issue of super powers at the top of the GAA; Dublin and Kerry look like they're bringing us back to the 1970's passing Sam back and forth, or will from this season in my opinion but having a senior championship, allows big big games between the top counties, which increases revenue etc that might just close the gap from 3rd to 8th in the country on the top 2. It is time for: Senior championship - 10 Intermediate - 12 Junior Championship - 10 (including London), hopefully 11 if Kilkenny play and even 12 if a path could be found for New York. I know it wouldn't initially be popular but GAA GO have proved all games can be shown live; some of the Div 4 games particularly Louth v Antrim was the best league game I watched this season, it's their own level and there would be a chance to win an All Ireland in Croke Park. sam1884 (UK) - Posts: 999 - 11/07/2021 10:13:57 2358486 Link 0 |
There is a massive gap alright, only a handful of even games, and even within that top group Dublin and Kerry would probably beat the others handy. Football seems to he going the way of hurling with its lack of balance.

I wouldn't know the ins and outs of resources in each county. I know a little about Limk and Tipp only. When I mention resources, I mean everything a county has at its disposal to put its team on the pitch. If as you say Cork has more clubs and players than any other county, it would seem that those resources are not being well utilized. Let's not go back too far, but a county with such resources has averaged about one AI senior football per decade over the last 50 years. I'm not concerned with underage. Underage players are potential resources for senior success, and as such are already included in my definition. Neither is it my business as to why this is the situation in Cork. It is up to Cork itself to get its house in order. I can only base my observations on what I see produced in front of me on the pitch...intermediate standard. Neither am I concerned with hurling. My comment and proposal are an effort to try to make Gaelic football a competitive, watchable championship. At the moment it is a laughable, unwatchable farce. Name one good game that has been played since the championship started. Louth vs Offaly??? foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 1911 - 11/07/2021 12:43:26 2358538 Link 1 |

I find it baffling that I am sitting on my coach watching Leitrim vs Mayo, 15 mins in 0-7 to 0-0. I am off for a walk, plus why would this be shown on National TV? Incredible nonsense. arock (Dublin) - Posts: 4896 - 11/07/2021 14:17:43 2358564 Link 0 |
Hurling has more balance because you don't Leitrim going up against Galway in the Connacht championship.

You're sadly right; twenty three or so minutes into the first big live Sunday Game match and it is game over. It isn't the players fault but this does need to stop or people will just turn off. You can't expect the public no matter how much we love the GAA to continue having interest in this. That is three predictable one sided games this weekend; hopefully Donegal v Derry saves the weekend.
