Tyrone Vs Donegal

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Hello all

What do we think? Predictions? Team news?

Looking forward to this game - there will be an element of shadow boxing but im expecting a tight battle like most Tyrone vs Donegal's are.

The game is been played at the renamed O'Neill's Healy Park.

I fancy us in the league this year. New management will need a good start and many lads will be playing for places with no certainties of involvement.

With home pleasures, Tyrone by 2.

What will O'Neill's Park Dungannon be called now?

Should be another tight battle. We just about beat Tyrone in last year's Championship. I couldn't believe Harte's decision to take young Canavan off that day! Luckily we got the scores we needed at vital times and showed good composure to see the game out.

All very quiet up here regarding injuries, player availability. It will be interesting to see the starting 15s for both counties. Will McShane make his comeback? Is Lee Brennan involved?

Both teams have great attacking options, but I think our defence is slightly stronger than Tyrone's at present. I'll give us the nod to win by about 3 points.

Tyrone people, I've started a new blog about following the intercounty team. Please feel free to visit it, have a read and subscribe via your email address if you wish. Any support is much appreciated. Thanks.

I think it's going to hard for Donegal to win this. Tyrone in omagh always difficult and with a new management team it'll be extra hard. Rumour has it that Donegal could be down a few of the experienced plays so it' could be a very young and inexperienced team.. looking forward to seeing a few of our young prospects.

Both team sheets will be very interesting to see. Have no idea how Tyrone will line out.

When can we see the match programmes? Or squads?

Yeah I suppose predicting any kind of result is premature at this stage until we at least see some sort of match day squad.
It's great to have games to look forward to again. I'd say the players will be like young calves let out into a field for the first time! God knows my playing days are well over but there's always that wee voice saying, "maybe tog out for the reserves and see how ya get on!"

The king is dead long live the king. Looking forward to Tyrone operating under new management. Good luck to Fergal and his background team I think he will make a good job of it and this is a good panel of players. Tyrone to win by 2 points.

Likely to be a cagey affair but could also be a great open game of football, I predicted a draw but I suppose Tyrone are favs being at home and with the new management in place they'll be looking to get off to a winning start.

Morgan; Rory Brennan, Ronan McNamee, Padraig Hampsey; Michael Cassidy, Peter Harte, Michael O'Neill; Frank Burns, Brian Kennedy; Paul Donaghy, Mattie Donnelly, Conor Meyler; Kieran McGeary, Conor McKenna, Richard Donnelly.

Subs: Benny Gallen, Mark Bradley, Lee Brennan, Darragh Canavan, Declan McClure, Darren McCurry, Hugh Pat McGeary, Michael McKernan, Cormac Munroe, Liam Rafferty, Niall Sludden

First Tyrone team and I have to say it is......uninspiring, for the want of a better word.

New era, everyone talking about attacking football. McGeary is a defender playing corner forward. Mattie Donnelly and Conor Meyler will drop back. Midfield, meh. Burns will drop back to play sweeper, Richard Donnelly or Mattie Donnelly will drop to midfield. Bradley was the form player in Tyrone championship last year, roasted Trillick, on the bench. Lee Brennan bench. Darragh Canavan should be starting. Darren McCurry was brilliant last year. Bench.
It just strikes me as the same old. Without Mickey Hartes brilliant decision making. Now we have Fergal Logan calling the shots.

A good Tyrone team and they won't be easy bet. Tyrone always give us a tough game.

So now that someone else apart from Mickey Harte is in charge this set up is uninspiring lol!

You couldn't make this up.

Fridge you have spent the past decade defending the way Mickey Harte picks his players and sets up his team and all of a sudden this is now meh!

Maybe Fergal and Brian will actually trust our players to play football.

At least give them a chance. God knows it cant be much worse than the fearful safety first approach which we have been subjected to over the past number of years.

Well nice try but not buying that. Tyrone tend to play better away from home. Chances are Tyrone will be very rusty too. Anything could happen, but not expecting a win tbh

I assumed Canavan would start with no McShane up top. I think Tyrone with that selection seem to be going for a physical approach to the middle third where Donegal are strong with big men. I see them targeting that area with a view to a potential championship meeting. Then again it could be a dummy team selection to some extent. God knows what Donegal team will start.

Call it is it is Wally

That's a defensive team. Canavan/Bradley/Brennan/McCurry/McAliskey/O'Neill, players who can score, on bench or not on squad. Big lumps of men who will drop back to clog the centre of defence.

McGeary corner forward? He's a defender. And the new vice captain that blows my mind.

Logan/Dooher came in with a remit to change. This isn't change. This is as defensive as it gets. I'm not writing them off. I support them 100%. But likes call a spade a spade......this looks like much the same.

Listen if it gets us to semi final/finals I will be happy. Big big pressure on Logan/Dooher. They have to consistently get to the latter stages of the championship or it won't wash.

I think we should reserve judgement on the new tyrone management until after their first match!

As a neutral I'd agree. I was surprised Tyrone posters wanted change for number of years! For all the criticism Mickey Harte had Tyrone consistently in Div 1, competing/winning Ulster titles, competing yearly in the All Ireland QF, some SF's and an All Ireland final. Looking from the outside that is a remarkable record when I look at what players Tyrone had. Many neutrals are waiting for Tyrone to consistently beat the other big counties and win All Ireland's again; as we've been told management was the only thing holding them back from doing so.

It may be correct but I'm not completly convinced; to me it could very much go the other way it becoming clear it was in fact management who had Tyrone over achieving.

Interested to see how they do from today onwards; now certainly reading from the outside many within Tyrone got their wish.

Mickey Harte was in some ways a victim of the success he brought to Tyrone in 03,05,&08. Once you've reached the summit it becomes the standard expected to some degree and that was always going to be difficult.
Teams were starting also to come to terms with the blanket style defensive strategy employed and Donegal were beginning to emerge and adapt also with an even more defensive type set up which saw them come more to the fore.
It will be interesting to see how Tyrone fare with new management in place and perhaps Armagh being a bit more competitive again too.
Either way it's still far too early to be judging them.
On the other hand Donegal will still have a big say in Ulster but how big is still anyone's guess.

You realise that the new Tyrone management team haven't played a single match yet?
