European Super League / GAA

On Match of the Day on Sunday, pundit Danny Murphy questioned the appeal of the proposed European super league by saying ( and this quote isn't perfect but its accurate in meaning) " who wants to play in a closed competition year in year out with no promotion or relegation and no way to measure success or improvement other than winning it?" , and the thought struck me THE PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS ! It seems the greedy owners of these clubs have a lot in common with the GAA hierarchy.

In fairness to the GAA, there's no relegation from the provincial championships. With the right results and the luck of the draw, your Carlows and Longfords can get riddled by Dublin in any given year.

Have you ever heard of the National Leagues? Like I said this is a pathetic thread initiated by a troll. Nothing to see here. Move on.

Some would argue the current championship is wrong for the "premier" GAA competition....should the best team decided by knockout or over a prolonged league by the number of games you win?

Interesting observation Rebel2020

To be fair, I think most Counties place large emphasis on the league these days for the reasons that Murphy has spoken about. It still amazes me that the GAA have the Provincial Championships as part of the primary competition.
But I don't believe that has anything got to do with money. Its more about people holding on to their position.

Once you bring professionalism into the GAA in the form of players, managers etc earning a professional living you can really the GAA goodbye, just not sustainable. We are still lucky that we can see what is happening in other sports and avoid at our peril. To make the Inter county game professional you will simply kill off the grassroots. That said look AFL in Australia, professional clubs, vibrant sport, great following, yet an insular game, but well supported - look at Ladies AFL really good crowds. But Inter-County wouldn't work in that model, big county clubs could. But the lesson is ignore the grassroots at your peril or its curtains.

I know it was only a joke post but the Munster Hurling championship counties are happy to push for anti-competitive practices also. When the new provincial group stages were being negotiated they wanted to protect the big 5 Munster counties from relegation. Is it the case now that Kerry go into Leinster so those 5 counties are ring fenced off and protected from relegation.

That actually isn't dissimilar to one of the worst aspects of the proposed Super League where 15 of the 20 teams are protected members that retain their place regardless of their performance.
