Replying To The_Bull:  "What do people want a fella to slog away for 70 minutes and deliver a folklore speech. The expectation of the players is ridiculous. The captains of any All-Ireland winners have obvious proven leadership skills and if a captain wants to deliver a speech thanking everybody who assisted in delivering the title well so be it."
If the captain "wants"? I'm pretty sure he's told what to say, word for word,, also, as another poster said,, some captains may not even want to give a speech at all.
Perhaps they should be respected too so,, although not thanking the sponsors mightnt go down to well.

Captains are not told what to say. Where did you get that ridiculous notion from

A captain preparing for an all ireland final/county final as if any member of management would bother them with what he is going to say in the speech as he prepares for one of the biggest days of his GAA career

So you've deduced that it's all just an extraordinary coincidence that pretty much all winning speeches are the exact same?
We'll keep you galwayfball.

All bar a few captains just list off a load of names thanking their family , management and sponsors yes I think the manage to write them by themselves. It's as if they are footballers and not public speakers and just think well this is what everyone else does

Did someone forget you in a speech one time?

The first sentence of that post sums up my point perfectly.

Anthony Molloy 1992, 'Sams for the hills' speech will never be forgotten up here, suppose it being the first time we ever won it makes it so memorable.

C'mon, they're just hurlers and footballers, not Martin Luther King!

I missed Cluxton's speech but if he's thanking all the backroom team it's probably still going on.

There was a time when we cherished qualities like. restraint and self-effacement. Cluxton in no show man- but he is a footballing genius who behaves in a. dignified and humble way in victory.. Standing up on the podium like Galvin, as if the whole celebration was about him without a thought for the defeated team looking on or doing. a jig a la Tadgh Kennelly is not his style and I for one am gratefeul for that.

I think Cluxton has amply demonstrated that you can enjoy your victory in a quiet , dignified way. He wouldn't enjoy getting on a podium and acting the ginnet.
