Protestant schools where many kids didn't play gaelic ever or very very few as before secondary school the kids played rugby, soccer hockey cricket? Don't think any really banned it but certainly didn't attempt to play gaelic games. They do now. Too close to what school and these things wouldn't happen now. There's competitions in rugby for schools at all levels and ways to progress even to top level. KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3674 - 11/10/2024 10:05:48 2574153 Link 0 |
Funny how it doesn't affect Hurling attendance figures even though the game may be televised live…. I suspect it might have something to do with the quality of fare that's on show….. The top guys know the game has become a basket case hence the trying out of a raft of rule changes at the one time never seen before in any sport but the deluded just can't bring themselves to admit it…. poor lads

If anything CavanBlue I do admire your perseverance. I enjoy a number of sports including Gaelic Football. I do not agree with you entirely as all games evolve due to tactical innovations, fitness levels of participants etc. However I do feel there is something wrong when after about 15-20 minutes of a special occasion such as this years All Ireland Final you can hear the coaching from the sidelines because the crowd are so quiet. Having said that I still enjoyed the game between two evenly matched teams. Brummiejoe (UK) - Posts: 8 - 11/10/2024 13:29:28 2574191 Link 0 |
Ah yes Hurling. The game of 2 provinces. Hurling is a minority sport compared to Gaelic football. So much so they had to get rid of 2 provinces to make it a viable competition. Hurling is brilliant to watch but it's a small number of teams playing each other more than once in a championship season to make sure it's a spectacle. Big attendances in the hurling games in Connaught and Ulster is there?

Big enough crowds at some Ulster club games. At the end of the day it's only a "minority sport" there because you have 2 Provinces largely populated by half-gaels;-)

And i am not having a pop at hurling more the ridiculous comparison.

The problem with attendances at alot of Leinster and Munster Football games is the dominance of Kerry and Dublin. The other problem in the AI series is meaningless games, super 8s, then 12 games to get rid of 4 teams. My post was only tongue in cheek! Even the lowest National hurling league match would surpass the embarrassing official attendance of 75 that attended an inter county football match between Longford and Waterford in the Taltainn Cup… You rightly say hurling is brilliant to watch but unfortunately the same thing can't be said of football.. Even the All Ireland final was a woeful spectacle in comparison to its hurling counterpart… Anyone who can't see this needs their head examined…. Those at the top have finally admitted to it (unlike you) and are now trying all sorts of changes in the hope of getting people back through the turnstiles but I have a feeling they are going to destroy what was once a great game for ever with the nonsense they are proposing….

Too scared to play hurling in Mayo. Only two competitive provinces in football now too.

You fairly skipped over my overall point there on how many counties are competitive in Hurling. What a surprise.

You are 100% right… of course there is something wrong when during an All Ireland football final you can hear a pin drop but the deluded can't get it or admit to it… Maybe it's their down time when they can get some peace and quiet..: You certainly didn't hear any coaching from the sidelines during the Hurling Final as the atmosphere was electric…

About the same as there are in Football tbh. Think there have been 8 different winners of both the AI Football and AI Hurling championships over the last 30 years. 6 in both over the last 20 years. 5 in Hurling and 6 in Football the last 10 years. All pretty even.
Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 13861 - 12/10/2024 10:19:49 2574302 Link 0 |
Exactly how many are competitive in football do you think…? 5/6 maybe at a push have a realistic chance of winning an All Ireland…. probably the same if not more in hurling….. What a surprise you couldn't work that out….

That doesn't mean my overall point doesn't stand. 5 or 6 teams capable of winning the hurling? No chance.

Dublin, Kerry and Tyrone have won 17 of the last 20 AIs.

There's nowhere near 6 teams capable of winning the hurling.at the moment. Clare were a breath of fresh air this year. It was great to see. At most at the moment there are three teams capable of winning the hurling. If Limerick get back on the horse next year you could be back to one team capable of winning the hurling. That'll be interesting.

Over the last 20 years there has been 6 different winners of the football championship and 6 different winners of the hurling championship, but with a much better spread of winners in the hurling. tireoghainabu (Tyrone) - Posts: 338 - 12/10/2024 14:34:58 2574346 Link 0 |
Would you have had Clare and Cork as finalists this year? Or Galway and Armagh in the Football?
