Former Dublin footballer Darragh Nelson has died aged 36 following a four-year battle with sarcoma cancer.
Nelson was a key figure in Ballyboden St Enda’s historic All-Ireland senior club triumph of 2016, having captained the south Dublin side during a hugely successful period.
He won three Dublin senior football championships and two Leinster titles with Ballyboden, while also claiming All-Ireland medals with Dublin in 2011 and 2013. His performances in 2015 earned him the Dublin Footballer of the Year award.
Tributes have been paid to Nelson, with former teammate Darren O’Reilly highlighting his leadership and the lasting impact he had on the club.
“Everyone looked up to him. His favourite quote was whatever it takes. An amazing person," he said.
O’Reilly also spoke of Nelson’s enduring connection to Ballyboden, revealing that he continued to support the club during his final days.
“In his last few days, Darragh was still supporting the club. This place meant an awful lot to him. It gave him an awful lot, but he gave this place an awful lot as well. He’ll be fondly remembered, and he’ll be loved.”
Nelson will be remembered as a hugely respected figure in Dublin football and a central part of one of Ballyboden St Enda’s greatest eras.
