Shamrock Gaels delivered a superb second-half display to power past Coolera-Strandhill (2-11 to 0-8) in yesterday’s Sligo senior football championship final replay at Quigabar.
Having snatched a draw last time out thanks to David Quinn’s two-pointer free in the ninth minute of injury-time, the Gaels got motoring early in the second-half in this one after a drab opening half saw the sides deadlocked on 0-2 each come half-time.
Shane Deignan, Patrick Kenny and 'Man of the Match' Ciaran Kenny sailed over points for the victors ahead of a Quinn’s two-pointer free making it 0-9 to 0-4 on 51 minutes.
Sean Carroll pushed the lead out to six and Deignan’s goal with two minutes left in normal time sealed the Gaels’ victory prior to Deignan raising another green flag for good measure towards the finish.
The nine-point victory over the holders marks the Gaels first Owen B Hunt Cup success since 1992 and third overall.
TweetCongratulations to Shamrock Gaels on winning the Sligo GAA Senior Football Title after a 33 year wait! Commiserations also to Coolera-Strandhill, however it’s been a fantastic 2 years for them. @CStrandhill @shamrockgaels @sligogaa pic.twitter.com/v3BVo1Kj3s
