Only 141 attended Tipp-Waterford football clash

FBD Semple Stadium hosted one of its smallest ever crowds when just 141 spectators passed through the turnstiles for last Sunday’s Allianz Football League Division 4 clash between Tipperary and Waterford.

While the game was a dead-rubber, the paltry attendance still came as a shock and raises questions about the current lack of interest in football in both counties. It also begs the question: why was a stadium with a 45,690-capacity chosen to host the fixture in the first place?

On the field, Sean O’Connor scored 3-4 as Tipp coasted to a 4-19 to 0-18 victory over a Waterford side who finished the League without a point to their name.

While the new playing rules have reinvigorated Gaelic football, there was also a disappointing attendance of just 625 at last Sunday week’s game between Offaly and Cavan in Tullamore, which is believed to be the lowest ever for a Division 2 match, notwithstanding games that were played behind-closed-doors when Covid-19 restrictions were in place in 2020 and ’21.
