Liam Cahill declared himself satisfied with Tipperary’s second half comeback in Walsh Park which condemned his former Waterford charges to relegation back to Division 1B of the Allianz Hurling League.
The All-Ireland champions were staring at a third straight defeat after trailing by 1-9 to 1-17 at half-time in the rearranged fixture, but turned it around after the restart to run out 2-24 to 1-23 winners.
“We said if we were playing against that wind in the first half, we set a target to be within six at half-time,” the Tipp manager explained to the media.
“We were a little bit off, but having said that, the awareness was there that if we were playing against the wind, that was usually going to be the case, that we were going to be chasing the game in the second half.
“There were a number of players that knew individually they were a little bit behind where their expectations would be. Once we address that and get in among them and start making sense of what had gone on in the first half, the players themselves started to really go after and fix those areas.”
Cahill added: “We needed to make sure that we were still functioning okay today. We got a huge test early on, Waterford created a lot of chances, created a lot of hassle for us with their movement and their energy and their picking off points from range, and then their movement inside.”
