Meath votes to restore minor to U18

Meath minors stand for the National Anthem before the Paul McGirr Cup final at O'Connor Park Tullamore

A motion to change the minor grade back to U18 was backed at a meeting of Meath club delegates last night.

A proposal from Walterstown to revert to U18 was discussed at last night's county board meeting. That motion would have allowed players who were in their final year of minor to play at adult level at junior level and below. Senior and Intermediate clubs at the meeting then argued that they should also be able to play 18 year olds at adult level and a motion from Wolfe Tones to allow this was then narrowly passed, 39 votes to 35.

Ironically, Meath was one of the few remaining counties which has opted to keep minor at U17 since the age eligibility was changed over a decade ago.

Tipperary's Competitions Control Committee will also propose a change back to U18 at its county convention.
