Mayo GAA is investigating reports of crowd congestion after last Sunday’s drawn Moclair Cup decider between Ballina Stephenites and Westport at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park.
Concerns were raised amid claims that not enough gates were opened on the terrace side as spectators attempted to exit the ground after the final whistle. One spectator described the scenes at one of the opened gates as ‘chaos’.
Earlier this year, a match day steward voiced his concerns about spectator safety at the Castlebar venue. Speaking after 27,000 spectators attended the Connacht SFC final between Mayo and Galway, Peter Geraghty called for improved access to toilet facilities near the main entrance, warning that it was an “accident waiting to happen” during half-time and after games.
The Mayo SFC final replay has been fixed for this Saturday at 3pm.
