'He's a sucker for punishment'

Pat Spillane is baffled as to why Ephie Fitzgerald has agreed to take charge of the Waterford footballers for a second time.

The Nemo Rangers clubman previously managed the Deise in 2022 and '23 after leading the Cork senior ladies to All-Ireland success in 2016. He reprised the role in September after replacing former Meath footballer Paul Shankey.

Writing in his Sunday World column, Spillane cannot understand why Fitzgerald would want to take on what he regards as the least attractive inter-county post in the country once again.

“Fair play to him, he is a sucker for punishment. Waterford are probably the poorest of the 32 teams. Last year they had one victory in the League,” the Kerry legend stated.

“What can he aim for? Maybe two or three League wins. Maybe one or two wins in the Tailteann Cup. But with not much in the way of new talent, and a small playing pool, it is a tough year ahead for Ephie.”
