Andy Moran wasn’t surprised by Kobe McDonald’s sensational debut performance for Mayo.

The AFL-bound teenager scored 1-4 after coming off the bench as the Westerners got back to winning ways in Division 1 of the Allianz Football League in emphatic fashion against Monaghan at Clones.

"Kobe lost a 'Connacht C' final for Gortnor Abbey last week and he came straight in on Wednesday," the Mayo manager explained to RTÉ Radio.

"He wanted to play, he wanted to be part of the squad, trained Friday and came up with us last night. He wanted to play, he wasn't here to make up the numbers.

"The guys will tell you - the locals - that he's been doing this for a couple of years now in Mayo. But it's a big step up today and you're saying I was a marksman, I never did anything like that at 18 years of age.

"There's a big difference and he's honestly just a great fella. He wants to learn and he wants to be part of the team, so it's no surprise to us that he'd come out and perform like that."
