Rival managers David McCague and Martin Corey heaped praise on Rory Beggan after his heroics in Saturday night’s Ulster club SFC final.

The Monaghan goalkeeper and dead ball specialist posted 0-11 and also kept a clean sheet as Scotstown beat Kilcoo by 0-19 to 0-16 after extra-time to end a 36-year wait for Seamus McFerran Cup success.

“It's phenomenal really. He's an amazing man, Rory Beggan,” Scotstown manager McCague enthused.

“He's so humble, he's so modest. Around the club he's quite a shy and quiet fella. But when it comes to training, he's really driving standards and really driving young people on.

“He's a brilliant man socially as well, with the young fellas as well. We're just blessed to have him. I don't have the words to describe how grateful I am as a Scotstown club man to have a player like Rory Beggan.

“The skill that he has is probably testament to how he has crafted that over a long number of years. I remember when he was a 15- or 16-year-old out practising frees. It's a gift that he has, but it's a gift that he has because he's worked so hard at it.”

McCague’s opposite number Corey said of the match-winner: “Rory Beggan is the most effective player in Monaghan, and I think today he showed he is the most effective player in Ulster. When you have Rory Beggan in your team, you are going to be in a good place.”
